They're only pass-skeleton drills, but true freshman QB Chris Leak dazzled once again, firing bullets all over Florida's practice field. Leak ran Florida's first-team offense and showed emotion after hitting TE Ben Troupe for two touchdowns. After threading a pass to Troupe, draped by four defenders - Guss Scott, Keiwan Ratliff, Daryl Dixon and Matt Jackson - Leak pointed to Troupe, pointed to the sky and then applauded. Leak threaded touchdown passes to the left corner of the end zone, the right corner of the end zone and the back of the end zone. "He is special," Cornelius said. "He's got such good mechanics." Said Troupe: "It seems like he [Leak] has been here for four years, like me. He doesn't seem like a freshman at all. With me, Dallas [Baker], Andre [Caldwell] and Chad [Jackson], hopefully nobody will be able to stop us."
Leak will be something special. Looks like he should challange for the starting job. But it will be tough for a freshman QB to make it in the SEC, especially in Gainesville.
here is something else.... Chris Leak will make his Florida Field debut Wednesday night at 6:30 in Florida's first fall scrimmage. This will be the first big practice for Leak and fellow freshman quarterback Justin Midgett — two guys who are battling Ingle Martin and Gavin Dickey for the starting job. Although Leak and Midgett (especially Leak) have been impressive in drills the past week, this will be the first time the two will be behind center at UF in a game-type setting, meaning the action will be a lot faster to them than it was in high school. It's a big night for several other freshmen as well, including cornerback Dee Webb and wide receivers Chad Jackson and Andre Caldwell. All three have put themselves in a position to play this fall and the coaches will be keeping a close eye on their progress tonight. WHO'S HOT: Leak. He's been on a roll the past two days and tore up the secondary in goal-line Monday night, throwing several touchdown passes to a variety of receivers. All that tape he's been watching apparently is paying off because he seems confident in knowing where to go with the football. His overall confidence running the offense seems to be rising with each practice. Redshirt freshman receiver Jemalle Cornelius is rapidly emerging as a play-maker this preseason, as a receiver and a punt blocker. Cornelius blocked three punts in a recent practice and is giving all the punters a headache with his speed rush from the outside. At receiver, he's also making great strides and is getting more and more passes coming his way. He has the speed and quickness to stretch the defense, and he's also shown he's got very good hands. Tailbacks Ran Carthon, DeShawn Wynn and Jimtavis Walker have all been impressive when the offense works on the running game against the defense. WHO'S NOT: Ingle Martin has been a little bit off with his passing accuracy the past two days, overthrowing several open receivers. Junior college tight end David Kenner continues to struggle picking up the offense and has to make up quite a bit of ground to give Ben Troupe some relief help this season. The coaches, however, think he'll come around because the effort has been there. Freshman punter Eric Wilbur has been cold and hot. On Monday night, he had a punt blocked and saw several attempts barely clear the line of scrimmage. Then, he boomed a 70-yarder. QUOTE: "People question the receivers, but I just blow it off because I know we are going to work hard each and every day and it's going to carry over to game day. We are going to go out there and be playmakers. We are going to show the world that this is the best receiving corps in the nation." — senior wide receiver Kelvin Kight.
Hey GatorChamp, What do you think of Justin Midgett (sp) running his mouth about how he expects to be the starter? Do you expect the whole team to back Leak or Martin or whoever?
All I know Is That when freshman run there mouth the upper class man get made and will kinda look down on you.
Well...he better enjoy throwing those TD's in practice--'cause he won't get them in Death Valley. ...just jyving....:geaux:
I am with southlink on this one. If Spurrier was still at UF I think Leak could be one of the best QB's in recent history there, but with Zook there I don't know if Leak will have the coaching he needs to develop. Zook didn't even really impress me that much when he was the Saints Defensive Coordinator.
