Caught my biggest one in today. Right at 15 lbs. Had one yesterday too. Not as big. Got back late this afternoon. Will try to get pics of several I have caught. The 2nd pic is an aligator snapping turtle I caught a couple weeks back. I think I weighed him at 8 lbs. They get 100+ lbs. so I plan to release him in a safe place so he can grow up to be a big boy. Notice the 3 rows vs. the smooth shell on the common snapper.
Tiga, they both look like common snappers to me. The second one doesn't look to have those three extra marginal scutes in the middle.
Yes indeed. A common snapper is smooth. That pic wasn't the best angle. Here's a better one. Oh and the 2nd pic (like Supa also pointed out) is another tell-tale sign. That little red worm-like thing in it's mouth...only the Aligator snapper has it. It's to attract fish so they can clamp down on them. Sorry about the quality of the pics, the bastad literally kept coming for me and I couldn't see with the camera up since I was kinda close up.
I've come to the conclusion that turtle hunting has a lot in common with sex. The more you do it the bigger the prize gets. In the case of turtles, that's a good thing.
Please don't encourage her. It's taken me this long to kinda get her to understand her place....as a woman.
