STARKVILLE, Miss. - Matt Flynn's favorite target is Early Doucet. Everyone knows it. Mississippi State knew it but couldn't stop it.
Flynn hit Doucet eight times for 72 yards with an 11-yard touchdown pass for a 24-0 lead early in the third quarter. Doucet caught nine passes in all, including a 6-yard reception from backup quarterback Ryan Perrilloux in the fourth quarter.
On LSU's opening drive of the third quarter for the 24-0 cushion, Flynn went to Doucet on all three passes he threw for gains of 11, 12 and 11 yards with the last one scoring the touchdown.
"We've got a lot of rhythm, Matt and I," Doucet said. "He knows where I'm going. He had a great game."
Flynn completed no more than one pass to any other receiver.
"What can you say about Early Doucet?" Flynn said. "He finds a way to get open. He finds a way to make the catch."
On more than a few of Doucet's nine catches, he looked covered.
"Doucet made some great catches," State cornerback Derek Pegues said. "We had a couple of good chances to get off the field, but we did not take advantage of them.
Doucet kept converting second and third downs into first downs. We could not stop them."
Flynn, who completed 12 of 19 passes for 128 yards, converted a key third-and-11 play from the State 39 on the Tigers' first touchdown drive of the game. He found Doucet for 14 yards to the State 25. Six plays later, tailback Keiland Williams gave the Tigers a 10-0 lead with 5:52 to play in the second quarter.
"We needed that one. We were struggling a little bit in the first quarter, and we were only up 3-0," Flynn said.
LSU led just 3-0 after the first quarter.
"We couldn't get things going in the first quarter, but Matt kept with it and started getting us in the end zone," Doucet said. "I like being the guy he looks to on the big plays."
LSU coach Les Miles was not surprised at Doucet's numbers.
"I think it's just a start for Early," he said. "He can do a lot more."
Five other players caught one pass on the night - wide receiver Terrance Toliver for 19 yards, wide receiver Chris Mitchell for 16 yards, wide receiver Brandon Lafell for 15 yards and a touchdown, tailback Charles Scott for 11 yards and a touchdown and Jacob Hester for 10 yards.
Perrilloux completed 2-of-3 passes for 21 yards with a 15-yard touchdown to LaFell. He came into the game having completed 1-of-4 passes for 10 yards last season.
He also rushed three times for four yards.
"You root for any young guy that gets on the field," Miles said.
