Why is it that we are limited in explanations to only the material? If there is an immaterial world how is it reasonable to demand that the immaterial subject itself to the material worlds "proof"? If the immaterial world does exist it is certainly "superior" to the material and the inferior testing the superior seems instinctively backwards.

It is important to separate what is real from what is conceptual if we are talking science. If we are talking religion, then everything is conceptual.

This place has moderators. But Free Speech Alley is a place where one can speak his mind within certain rules. One is free to make a damn fool of himself and is subject to being criticized for it. We do not censor opinions.

This has not been a problem. People only get edited, deleted, or receive infractions by breaking the terms of their user agreement, not for being opinionated.

Polonium:

For those that don't know (and this description is my own until the quoted below) polonium is some sort of radioactive material that decays quite rapidly (3 minutes I think). There are polonium halos in granite which suggest that the granite would have to be made instantaneously rather than over long periods of time. When the polonium decays it leaves some sort of a mark in the granite. I suspected you were talking about Gentry. I believe his hypothesis has been found to fall short since they require supernatural intervention to work and fails to account for the multple parallel lines of evidence for a very ancient earth. These are the conclusions of two of his most prominent critics.

"Polonium Haloes" Refuted

Gentry's polonium halo hypothesis for a young Earth fails, or is inconclusive for, all tests. Gentry's entire thesis is built on a compounded set of assumptions. He is unable to demonstrate that concentric haloes in mica are caused uniquely by alpha particles resulting from the decay of polonium isotopes. His samples are not from "primordial" pieces of the Earth's original crust, but from rocks which have been extensively reworked. Finally, his hypothesis cannot accommodate the many alternative lines of evidence that demonstrate a great age for the Earth. Gentry rationalizes any evidence which contradicts his hypothesis by proposing three "singularities" - one time divine interventions - over the past 6000 years.

Of course, supernatural events and processes fall outside the realm of scientific investigations to address. As with the idea of variable radioactive decay rates, once Gentry moves beyond the realm of physical laws, his arguments fail to have any scientific usefulness. If divine action is necessary to fit the halo hypothesis into some consistent model of Earth history, why waste all that time trying to argue about the origins of the haloes based on current scientific theory? This is where most Creationist arguments break down when they try to adopt the language and trappings of science. Trying to prove a religious premise is itself an act of faith, not science.

POLONIUM HALOS AND MYRMEKITE IN PEGMATITE AND GRANITE

The formation of granite by replacement of solid rocks means that Gentry's theory is no longer tenable. He can no longer legitimately say that Po-halo-bearing granites must form by supernatural means.

Solid diorite and gabbro rock, which had previously crystallized from magma, has been subjected to repeated cataclasis and recrystallization. This has happened without melting; and the cataclasis provided openings for the introduction of uranium-bearing fluids and for the modification of these rocks to granite by silication and cation deletion.

Yes, I am aware of the Moderators. I was trying to point out that in whatever situation, if those in authority "have a want to" to influence a debate, or massage an issue to a certain outcome, they can. If it happened on TigerForums it would not be the first time in history.

They have done this in the case of Global Warming.

If one believes in a supernatural being then he believes it and science can not prove otherwise. But neither can one attempt to explain a scientific phenomenon using supernatural beliefs.

Agreed.

To say someone has been completely cured of a debilitating illness which defies every known medical and scientific method simply because this person gave money to the farting preacher, is ludicrous. Is this cure miraculous? Could be. But to say it's a miracle and leave it at that with no medical or scientific research is just as idiotic.

I think he is mad because in the global warming thread one of us edited his post. He was offering to meet up with someone to kick their ass. Or something like that. I guess he feels that was relevant to the conversation and should not have been edited out. Obviously it is an attempt to control the global warming opinions posted here.
