With the big sports story revolving around Tocchet's bookie service, this seems like a legit question.

I'm sure there are good social reasons for some to advocate a ban on gambling, but it just seems counterintuitive to not allow adults to give each other money based on something happening or not happening.

I'm curious about your thoughts though.

The only reason it's illegal, is because it's difficult to track cash transactions.
That makes it near impossible to tax. No taxes, no legalized gambling.

    correct. ive stated that before.

and gambling is legal, its called nyse and nasdaq. also lotterys and bingo and casinos.

ive lost more money on stock options i had no control over than this entire board has collectively gambling other methods more than likely. ya know, that dot com thing wasnt very fun for me.

its one big farce but im still not sure why someone wouldnt use an offshore. theres no benefit in using a bookie anymore. as long as you use an accredited one.

Although I think it's stupid we cant have casinos or gabling here in Alabama, I still think it should be state-sponsored.

I don'y have a problem with gambling in and of itself. I have been to casinos, my friends and I are constantly placing stupid little bets of various spoting events.

My problem with the hockey case is that those people are in position to effect the outcome of games. I know that so far there is no evidence that they bet on hockey, but des anyone really believe that.

I think this is analogous to insider trading in the stock market.

Oh, by the way, how is Gretsky's wife placing big bets through the assistant coach of her husband's team abd he not know about it. I know he's always been squeaky clean, but I'm not buying this one.

WOW! Mike and Mike just revealed that New Jersey police have revealed recorded phone calls in which Wayne Gretsky himself discussed the gambling ring with Tocchet.

Now we have a coach and part owner of a sports franchise tnvolvd in a major gambling ring.

Regardless of what you think about gambling, this is the LAST think the NHL needs. Perhaps this will be the final nail in its coffin.

All I know is, this guy should be banned from coaching, but be in the hall of fame based on his on-field accomplishments. Same for Gretzky if he is found to be directly involved.

The problem with unregulated gambling is the cash flow making it a prime conduit for money laundering and tax evasion. The mafia, the drug runners, and every gangster in the country wants as big a piece of the action as he can defend.

Gambling is fine, but the government needs to keep some control.

The only problem I have with legalized gambling in Louisiana is the fact that it is unconstitutional. Calling it "gaming" is just a legal fiction. It is like calling cocks "poultry" instead of animals in order to allow cock fighting. If Louisiana wants to legalize gambling, then it should change the constitution - not get around it. It is this kind of stupid politics that causes Louisiana to be referred to as the "northern most banana republic."
