You are right Rebelrealist-- I never attended Ole Miss so maybe thats why I don't know the story behind the school's founding. I am an Alabama graduate who is a Rebel fan--- because I am just old enough to remember and root for Archie and his Army

Jon, you dumbazz, don't you know anything about Mississippi?
It's so they can get better access to those farm animals. None
of them will admit this, and you're just embarassing our guests
by asking such a silly question. What a Mississippi man does to a goat or a sheep in the privacy of his own barn is his own business

I know, Ramah, but I was just testing to see how honest our Mississippi friends really are. I lived in Grenada, MS for a year, it's not that far from Oxford. All the goats and sheep around there are skiddish, and for good reason. If only they could get up with the people from Simmesport, LA and find out the REAL reason they wear those white rubber boots, the farm animals in MS wouldnt stand a chance.

Your Tiger affiliation overrides your unfortunate geographical status. IF (there is not a font large enough to use here) LSU were to lose, the LSU fans would still be happy because they would be leaving there. Ole Miss fans have to stay.

I have always heard that the major state universities are purposely located where they are to eliminate distractions for the students.

That's why UT is not in Nashville, LSU in New Orleans, UGA in Atlanta, etc.

    Anybody else heard this?

Correct me if I'm wrong but,
more often than not State universities are in the capital
    cities.

    Alabama in Tuscaloosa...

Tuscaloosa was actually the state capital of Alabama for a while but I don't know if that was before or after the university was founded.

I concur...I'm here in "Big Orange" country and as far as I'm concerned, I'm still a Louisianian. I may live the rest of my natural days here in Tennessee, but I'll be a Louisiana boy forever.

Wasn't what is now LSU originally located in Alexandria, when it was just a military academy back in 1859 or so, just prior to the Civil War?

UGA was founded way back in 1785 in Savannah long before Athens, Milledgeville or Atlanta even existed. Someone eventually donated a tract of land in Athens...
