This is just a part of the story:

To any who might say that this would "dilute" or "ruin" the regular season, get real. The largest proposed playoff is 8 teams and we all know that's not going to happen. Even so, it's pretty freaking tough to finish in the top 8, so you better still be aiming for perfect seasons... and at least you still have a chance with a brutal schedule. I think this would help the SEC a lot.

Don't get me wrong though, I'm not holding my breath for this. I'm just happy it's getting serious consideration, from people with the power/ability to change things, and from a conference like the SEC which has a proven record of affecting change in CFB.

IF this happens, that is likely to change. Simply because, the NCAA would then have the power to divide the money...right now, it's the one area that they don't have complete control over. In basketball, they do.

why does everyone think this? The schools control what would happen. Where is there a law that says if you have any kind of tournament the NCAA automatically gets to control it. If it's a matter of words that won't matter either b/c it'll be dressed up with "Bowls" anyway. The schools themselves have set it up so that they control the postseason. I have never heard of any legal reason why they would be forced to give that up to the NCAA if one day the winners of the Fiesta and Orange Bowls had to square off in the Sugar, or some such arrangement. If this is documented somewhere, please provide a link? I may be wrong and would like to be corrected if I am.

I just don't see how the NCAA can have the authority to take things over if one day a fifth BCS bowl is added (Cotton, lets say), and on a rotating basis the winners of two other BCS bowls face off in another the rotated NC BCS bowl, while the remaining two BCS bowls remain just that, prestigious BCS bowls with high payouts. This is obviously a final four type system, but it doesn't take much of an imagination to think about how it could incorporate 6 or even 8 teams. I'm sure somehow there would still have to be a "mid-major" rule and OF COURSE there would have to be the obligatory Notre Dame rule.

One more thing, I doubt any school presidents in BCS conferences would be supporting this if the NCAA taking a cut was even a chance so how can you explain what the article says about school presidents supporting the idea. They wouldn't be if they thought control could be snatched from them.

I sure hope there's no "Limit" to the # of teams from a conference.....IF it would happen.

I am not sure why the presidents have started to change their position on the issue, but it must have something to do with money.

Maybe their concerns about the effect on education have been satiated.

Wake me up when they devise a format, and release how they would determine which teams get in. If that's decided by people voting, or some computer formula, it will still be flawed at best, and even sh!ttier than we have now at worst.

How can it be more flawed than now? You could still call it a "mythical" national championship but I for one would be a bit more satisfied, I think.

Sorry, I should have said "as flawed".

Because if it still relies on human vote, and computer polls, all you're doing is moving the controversy, not fixing it. For example, if you only allow 4 teams into the playoff (using last year for our example), what 4 teams get in and why?
Ohio St is in because they were un beaten
    now who's the other 3?
4 teams had only 1 loss (Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin, Louisville) plus Boise was un beaten. What 2 teams get left out and why? And don't tell me the #4 team doesn't "really" have a chance, because nobody in the media gave Florida much of a chance last year either, but we know how that turned out.

Yes we know how that turned out. FLA. beat the crap out of tOSU and will do it again in the NCAA basketball championship. I hate FLA. but I hate tOSU more.
