With all of the press about the game and how it was lost and the bad coaching, etc. Everyone can say what they will, BUT there is one thing that really bothers me. It was a comment from Coach Saban, “The last 14 or 20 seconds of this game somewhat tarnish the things that this team has accomplished in its four years. I only feel badly that I could not do more to help the players play better." :angryfire  http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/sports/fb/fbc/2973985 It makes me sad that he said this about LSU and the team. It was apparent that the players had a lot to overcome as well as being young. But hey, he should not “tarnish” the past achievements of the players, LSU, and most importantly the coaching staff that also includes him. :champs: What is he saying about himself? We all know by now it could have been different and things could have been handled better. Iowa was focused, but they weren’t losing a coach. And, yes I know a true athlete, regardless of any and all conditions, must have the desire to win. But sometimes things just overwhelm you at times and as player cause you to lose focus. Hey, LSU came back from a deficit. I think that they have a great future to look forward to with a lot of young players. However, I still think the comment should not have been made because this is a different team then last year or the year before. The comment should have focused on this years team and coaching staff. Here is a pretty good article that can sum up a lot. The article said “As it turned out, success brought a whole new set of problems, and they were even harder to handle than the ones that usually accompany failure.” http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/college/orl-sptcaponenote31123104dec31,0,272651.story?coll=tf-main-sports I look forward to a new coach, staff and a new season. Happy New Year everyone. Heather ldskule:
I wouldn't read a whole lot into those comments, Heather. Saban isn't exactly the warmest guy in the world to begin with, and his communication skills flat-out suck.
I think what he meant was that to go out with a loss in the Capital One Bowl takes away from all that these seniors and others have achieved because its the last thing fans will remember. I think he's right, I just don't like the way he pushed the blame off of himself and said he wished there was more he could do because I felt there were a few bad coaching decisions during the game and Nick didn't own up to them.
My friend's dad summed it up pretty well. This game was a metaphor for the entire season. It was a rocky ride, and then in the end we think we've got it (ala Saban) and then we don't. Okay maybe it wasn't as profound as I thought.
