I wonder... was Pete Carroll was there? If so, does he think he just won the Paul "Bear" Bryant coaches award too?

I'm sure Carroll thinks he is the People's Coach of the Year.

Congrats to Saban. He obviously has done an excellent job. However...

Considering all the obvious pub and accomplishments of him and his staff and team this year, I was really pulling for Kragthorpe, the new coach at Tulsa. This guy, in his first year, lead Tulsa to an 8-4 record after they went 1-11 last year. I think they had something like 4 wins over the previous 3 seasons.

The guy was up for multiple coaching awards this year but I think he was overshadowed by some of the bigger names from the bigger programs.

Remember his name. You will be hearing it again I'm sure.

Here's a little tidbit of info that I saw on another message board that might interest you concerning Saban and Stoops.

I just read a recent issue of Sports Illustrated that had a review of the Sugar Bowl. There were comments about the relationship between Bob Stoops and Nick Saban. They've know each other for many years. Nick used to recruit the Youngstown, OH., area and he was good friends with Bob's dad. Nick spent a lot of time in the Stoops home talking to Bob's dad about coaching defense. In 1986, Iowa played at Michigan State. Bob and Mike were assistants at Iowa and their brother was playing DB. After the game, the Stoops were dinner guests of Nick Saban and his wife in their home. There are a lot of similarities between Nick Saban and Bob Stoops in their approach to coaching football. A lot of it goes back to Youngstown, OH and the elder Stoops. It's impressive that Bob and Nick are now two of the top coaches in college football and their friendship goes way back.

There is a lot of coaching history from Youngstown as well as Miami, Ohio and Kent State. Ohio State's Jim Tressel won 4 or 5 DIAA national titles at Youngstown State. Former 49er's owner Eddie DeBartolo is from Youngstown. Lou Holtz at Kent State as well as Saban. Paul Dietzel, the LSU coach for the 1958 NC team, as well as Don Shula, Woody Hayes, Bo Schembechler, Weeb Eubank, Ara Parsegian and Paul Brown all have a coaching history at Miami, Ohio.

Throughout the sports world, Miami University has the unique reputation as the "Cradle of Coaches." At last count, more than 100 Miami graduates were active in coaching or administrative work in the professional and collegiate levels.

The story with the exact vote has been delayed when Pete cried for a recount and straw poll by the voters. Stay tuned!

    Bryant Award history

Congrats to Coach Saban on the Award and to the team for having a season that helped him win it.

That being said, every article I have seen states that Paul Dietzel won the "Bryant Award" in 1958. I was wondering, did this award exist at that time or was it named something else. Surely Coach Bryant's career deserves to have an award named after it, but Bear Bryant was in his first year at Alabama. His first game was a loss to LSU in Mobile. While he was a highly regarded coach, he had not attained the legendary status he would later. In fact, he had not won a National Title yet. No one was willing to name an award after Coach Saban in 2000, when he approximated Bryant's 1958 accomplishments. (That's not to say he will, but here's hoping!)

I just wonder if there was another name for the award at the time.
