TexasTigers Are You With Me ?

We all know the story of Lane, no need to rehash it. He ran from competition and decided he did not want to compete for his position. But frankly any kid who wants things handed to him is more then welcome to leave and did us and LSU a favor. So he went to Ole Miss, where Ironically he is competing for the job with 2 other young men.

    My question,
How will LSU fans react when/if he comes in the game. For me, could care less, if he is the kind of player that runs from competition and takes the path of least resistance. Well.... See ya later.
I am sure he is a nice guy, I dont know him personally, but I am still shocked a kid that is a competitor like he claims would not relish the chance to play with the best (Or at least at the time we thought was the best, right now it looks like Lane may have had the job anyway, but I have faith in JR)

Oh, he'll get his fair share of boos and IMO deservedly so. I talked to Lane a couple of times two year's ago during his recruiting visits to LSU games and he seemed like a good kid and at the time was going to be a Tiger. I really think he got some bad information or read too much hype on Russell because he could have easily come in and competed with the QBs we've got right now.

Might be a big deal for the first couple of plays he's in there, but I don't think it goes much beyond that. Now if this game had the same implications and hype of last year, then I think much more would be made of it. Does anybody know why he picked Ole Miss? Based on what I've seen of him, it looks like he'd be better suited to be the heir apparent to Matt Jones in Warden Nutt's system. Was it because of some kind of "Cutcliffe is good at developing NFL QB's hype"?

I imagine I'll yell and scream some obscenities at him in some sort of drunken tirade on Mr. Lane. Should be fun!

Baseball may be his future. I'm guessing OleMiss told him he could play both. I'm not sure Coach Saban wants his QBs missing spring practice.

Honestly, most of the fans in the stadium don't follow recruiting as close as the people on this forum. Unless an article appears in the paper, I doubt many will even be aware of the issue.

    LSU moment arrives for Lane
    By Michael Wallace
    [email protected]

OXFORD — The date has been circled for quite some time.

Ole Miss quarterback Robert Lane knew it might take a while to break into the rotation while sitting behind Micheal Spurlock and Ethan Flatt when preseason practice opened in August.

So Lane, a redshirt freshman, plotted his course, tried to make the most of his third-string practice snaps and set a personal deadline of Nov. 20. Lane's chance just had to come by then, he thought, hoped and prayed.

The moment Lane's waited for since he signed with the Rebels in February of 2003 has arrived.

When Ole Miss (3-6, 2-4 SEC) plays No. 14 LSU (7-2, 4-2) Saturday in Baton Rouge, Lane will return for his first college game in the state where he was a prep phenom. It will also mark his first trip to the campus where he would have unpacked his bags until he decided to check out of his oral commitment to LSU, called an audible and headed to Oxford.

"You try to treat it just like any other game, but you know it's special because I've got a lot of connections with LSU," said Lane, a Monroe, La., native and the state's Mr. Football for 2002. "Early in the season, I knew I wasn't really in the (playing) rotation. I hoped I would be by now. When my time came, I was going to step in and produce. That time came a little earlier than I thought, but that's fine with me."

Lane, whose playing time has increased each of the past four games, could be in store for his most extended action of the season today. The Rebels are coming off their worst loss of the season, a 35-3 setback at Arkansas. It was Ole Miss' third straight defeat and one that eliminated the team from bowl contention.

The Rebels have two main objectives as they finish with games at LSU and at home against Mississippi State next Saturday. First is to go out with strong performances against their two biggest rivals. And in doing so, the coaching staff hopes to start building toward next season.

That process may have started in the second half of the Arkansas game. Lane, who appears to have beaten out Spurlock as the No. 2 quarterback behind Flatt, played most of the second half against the Hogs.

In what has become customary in recent weeks, the 6-foot-3, 220-pound Lane excelled in making plays with his feet but was inconsistent in the passing game. He rushed for a team-high 94 yards against Arkansas, but completed just 4 of 13 passes for 42 yards in 34 snaps. Lane's rushing yards were the most by an Ole Miss quarterback since Tom Luke ran for 136 in a 1990 win against Mississippi State.

LSU coach Nick Saban is aware of Lane's potential. He was teased by it.

"I'm real happy to see that he's doing well," Saban said. "We like to keep our favorite (in-state prospects) at home, but sometimes it doesn't work out."

Lane and Matt Flynn of Tyler, Texas, committed to LSU in August of 2002, the summer before Lane's senior season at Neville High. A Parade All-America selection, Lane was all set to follow in the footsteps of his father, Bob Lane, a quarterback at LSU in the 1970s who later transferred. Lane's uncle, Cliff, is a former tight end for the Tigers.

But Lane backed away when he learned that Saban's staff was still pursuing commitments from JaMarcus Russell and Omarr Conner. To Lane, LSU coaches backed out on their word.

"They said they were going with the first two quarterbacks who commit," Lane said. "After that, I was fine. I even helped recruit other guys to go there. After that, they still kept recruiting JaMarcus (LSU's backup) and Omarr. They had to do what they had to do."

So did Ole Miss coach David Cutcliffe, who was searching for the Rebels' future replacement for Eli Manning.

"We heard a rumor he was interested and once we talked to him, we got the ball rolling full speed ahead," he said.

Lane ended up at UM and Flynn and Russell, who will likely play today opposite Lane, went to LSU.

I understand Lane had to do what was best for him, but I still wouldn't mind seeing him taking a pounding by the LSU defense.

  10. marc, I read that article earlier today, all the while thinking, I hope Marcus Spears drives him in the dirt!

Nothing personal, but that should be the price you pay for not being a tiger....Can't think of a single GOOD reason to pick ole pisser over LSU. What the hell was he thinking?!?!
