He was 3rd on the PSU depth charts after spring practice, and yes McGloin who started most of the games last year is terrible. I really hope Bolden does not end up at LSU
I don't think that whether LSU wins the NC has anything to with whether Mettenberger stays for his SR season. And from the earlier post about his supposed current mock draft status, he is 50th right now and he won't have to play like Newton to rise dramatically from there. If he has a good season, not a great one, he will rise into the 1st round. All he has to do is to show he can utilize his tools...no one questions the guy's size obviously, his arm, and I'm hoping he shows the decision making and POISE that for LSU has been lacking at QB since Matt Flynn left.
If you want to see this guy in action, he started and played the first half against Alabama last year. His receivers were terrible. The game is on Youtube.
Thanks for the post and I had mentioned also that Penn State didn't have the offensive weapons (multiple good RBs and multiple good WRs) that LSU had. Yet, last season, Bolden still completed 58% of his passes. I need to look up the video you referenced but I went back to his over 9 minute HS SR highlight video (as always emphasis on highlight). Having said that, he looked darn good....great touch on passes, led his receivers well, one pass is over 55 yards so his arm is certainly fine, quick decisions, and speed the times he ran...mostly on QB draw type plays. Also, he made quick decisions but that is hard to really judge because my guess is most HS don't do "read and run routes". Thus, he knows exactly where the WRs are supposed to be during the play and also probably doesn't even bother with even looking for a secondary receiver. He throws to the primary or probably runs the ball. This would be a superb pickup as I've said...there is one perhaps interesting hitch. Since he said he wasn't coming back to Penn State (remember that is the REAL reason he was dropped on the depth chart despite what some have claimed) BEFORE the NCAA sanctions, LSU has to make sure he falls into the "transfer without sitout situation". Also, LSU wants him to count against the 2012 class, not the 2013 one. Of course LSU has a spot due to Liggins not qualifying (a side note is that apparently every signee but Liggins qualified).
Penn State may have had the most inept offense for a high profile BCS team last season. And this guy was replaced midseason by McGloin (well the time sharing ended between the two, essentially). We'll see how he competes.
Glad you added that last phrase about time sharing because I did find the Alabama game which to be fair was an early one. But just like you stated, PSU had Bolden starting, then McGloin played some, then Bolden ended the game with their only TD drive of the game. The bottom line is Penn State's offense was bad, no too ways about it. They had a good RB and their passing game was poor. Dudley above pegged it from the UA/PSU video. First play of the game, Bolden throws a 50 yard pass, the receiver is behind the Alabama defender, and the WR dropped the ball for what should have been a 50 yard play. Then later in the game, nice completion to the TE, runs with the ball and coughs it up on just a mediocre hit. Their WRs/TEs were division 1-AA caliber.
