REPORT: DOLPHINS TO MAKE OFFER TO FORMER MSU COACH SABAN

    December 17, 2004

The Miami Dolphins are expected to present Louisiana State coach Nick Saban with a contract proposal before the weekend is done and perhaps as early as today, the Miami Herald reported, citing an anonymous NFL source.

The offer, which is expected to go to Saban's agent Jimmy Sexton, is to include a clear definition of Saban's scope of power over Miami's football operation and a salary structure expected to average between $4 million and $5 million per year.

Sources said if Saban takes the job, he would be able to mold Miami's football operations.

That does not bode well for current general manager Rick Spielman, who might have to accept a demotion or be fired if Saban wants to bring in people he trusts.

The team is also expected to interview at least one minority candidate in the coming days.

The Dolphins had intended to interview Tyrone Willingham when he was fired as Notre Dame's coach but were thwarted when he was hired by the University of Washington. The team might ask to interview former Raiders head coach Art Shell.

Saban might not want to wait that long. One LSU source said this week that Saban likely would be Miami's head coach or retire from the job chase within "seven to 10 days." Saban coached Michigan State in 1995-99.

Does Art Shell know that he is just the "token" black candidate?

The NFL policy of interviewing minority candidates is nothing but a sham. If I was a minority candidate and knew I was the token interviewee I would tell em to shove it.

The minority candidate thing won't be a problem. Miami can honestly say they tried to find a candidate (Willingham first) and nobody took the bait.

Even if the NFL doesn't buy this, $500,000 is small change when you're willing to pay over $4 mil a year for a guy.

It will be a sad day for LSU if Saban leaves. He has brought LSU back to the National Stage. He's brought high-expectations and big-time excitement to Tigerland.

I, for one, am praying he decides to stay a Tiger.

Why doesn't Eddie Jones, being the "BIG LSU alum" and all, interview Terry Robinskie if he wants LSU blood???

Eddie! Leave Nick alone!!!! ....OR DON'T COME BACK TO BATON ROUGE, EDDIE!!!!!!

Eddie Jones, by all reports, does not want Nick Saban. Since Nick would be in control of all football operations, he could (and likely would) fire him.
