Bush previously had several chances to take him out, but passed on the opportunity because he didn't wish anything to detract from his case for war.

Taking out the lead Al Qaeda henchman would have removed one of Bush's biggest selling points.

Morning TV (ABC News) said that Zarqawi had vowed never to be captured and that he detonated a suicide vest he was wearing. US forces are said to be trying to make a DNA and fingerprint match to determined who was killed.

The wedding bombing in Jordan apparently turned arab public opinion against him. The assault on the stronghold was the result of a tip from an disgruntled insider.
