I am adamently opposed to a long playoff system to determine the D-1A National Champion, but I think one extra game played between the winners of the bowl games between the top four BCS teams (1 vs 4, 2 vs 3) might satisfy everyone. However, a long playoff system is impractical, unless you do away with the bowls and adopt a home and away system like in the minor NCAA football program playoffs. The main reason is that you will end up with major games played in front of half empty stadiums. There is no way 40,000 fans can follow their teams around the country for three weeks or more. On the recent situation, let's carry it one step farther: let's say that Oklahoma had lost to K-State by one point instead of by 28. They would not be the conference champion, but some might make a real case that they can still vote for them No 1 in the AP and Coaches polls. Let's say that K-State would have been ranked 5th or 6th before the game, and the loss would not be considered that severe. You can carry it farther than that: let's say that LSU's and USC's only loss apiece came very late in the seasons. Then the Oklahoma loss and their losses would be close together. If we say that no conference champion can play for the NC, then you could still end up with the no 2 and no 3 teams in the AP and Coaches Polls playing in the NC game. I guess I am saying that no system is perfect.
