I have a question. If Jamarcus and Flynn get some playing time this weekend. If it becomes a blow out. Can they still be red-shirted. What is the rule for the amount of playing time someone can play before they are no longer eligible for a redshirt. Thanks.
According to the NCAA website you are charged for one year of competition after one play. http://www.ncaa.org/eligibility/faqs/faqs_eligibility_seasons.html I believe after that you have to file an appeal for a redshirt and are at the mercy of the NCAA rules committee.
I believe the rule only applies after the third game of the season. If a player plays one play after the third game, he will get charged with a year and will not be able to be redshirted. If an injury occurs sometimes, you can apply for a medical redshirt and the NCAA will grant it.
It is indeed the third game, I believe. After that, they need to stay on the sideline to get a redshirt. Unless a freshman comes in for the Arizona game and makes an earth-shattering impact, you won't see them much after that. I'm telling ya'll, unless Randall or Mauck goes down, Russell is getting a redshirt. I just don't see him playing a lot if everyone stays healthy, so what's the point.
There isn't a point. We need their health much more than their depth. With Mauck, Randall, and I guess Harrison...hopefully we won't need them. But I guess if worse comes to worse, we can always drop a redshirt.
The rule is ONE play and the redshirt is gone. There is no 3 game rule. It may have existed at one time, but it does not now. But there is such a thing as an medical redshirt if you get hurt early in the season. Maybe that is where the "third game" idea comes into play. I wonder if we will have a lot of true freshman having season ending muscle pulls after the first game...
The NCAA should have a rule something like Major League Baseball. They call up a lot of mior leaguers when they expand the rosters in September but when those players come back next year they are still considered rookies if they haven't had X number of at bats or played X number of innings. College football should allow freshmen to play in X number of quarters during their true freshman season and if they don't exceed that number they would still have 4 years of eligibility left.
I can remember just recently players playing in maybe the first or second game and then getting redshirt years. I am almost positive that Derron Parquet played in a few non-conf games in his true freshman year (99) and then got a redshirt. The only reason I remember this is my roommate went to Rummel and was saying how he was the shit. Then he redshirted and eventually transferred.
Redshirts must be decided after the 3rd or 4th game. Thus, the freshman (can anyone else who has yet to be redshirted) can play in those games. However, there may be a limit to the total amount of playing time those players may receive before they are ineligible for a redshirt. I'm not sure though.
