1. Rohan Davey - incredible college passer; not athletic or a running threat; had the benefit of four years of preparation before starting 2. Matt Mauck - a winner; athletic; great run threat; played smart and within his abilites; close second to Davey; was an afterthought to fans with no expectations when he came to LSU from baseball 3. Jamarcus Russell - highly regarded coming out of high school; incredible arm strength; lacking in the mental part of the game for most of his career resulting in the need to come from behind to beat several teams that his team shouldn't have been behind in the first place; has the magic to make the big throw to come from behind when the game is on the line; began to play within himself by the end of his fourth year; will be the highest drafted due to his physical skills and his team's winning record; to this point in his career a mild disappointment to some fans due to the incredible expectations he had coming in; Daunte Culpepper-type who can run but with a stronger arm than Culpepper 4. Josh Booty - first team SEC as a junior; had to deal with dissention on the team because many teammates thought Davey should be starting; left for the draft a year early because of the risk that he would lose his starting job to Davey during his senior year; would make dumb decisions at bad times; a disappointment to fans due to the legend that was created about him while he played baseball and due to his recruiting ranking coming out of high school; did not have the benefit of the great coaching that the other five had; had the physical tools but lacked the mental; you wonder if it would have been different if he came straight from high school 5. Marcus Randall - excellent football player who played out of position at LSU; coaching staff made a bad decision to keep him at quarterback where he never developed; nervous in the pocket; could not read defenses; poor passer; excellent runner; well-liked by team veterans; won by good leadership, playing within his abilities, excellent running, and great coaching/talent around him; might have made an excellent safety or running back
id take the 3 we have now over the others in their prime if i had my choice. outside of the one and only rohan that is.
1. Russell- 20-4 over the last two seasons. 2. Matt Mauck- could move good on his feet. Made very few mistakes. 3. Rohan Davey- good, but had alot of help from Josh Reed. Could avaid a sack by not moving even better than JaMarcus Russell. 4. Josh Booty- never panned out to what he could have. 5. Marcus Randall- thank God for the Blue grass miracle.
I would put Josh Booty behind MR. Simply because for all the crap MR put up with he was a true blood LSU tiger. Class act. Not a great QB but had the heart and will of a champion. The opposite of Booty, had all the talent and a less then desirable head on his shoulders. But marries really well.
Booty was less prepared than JR when he stepped foot on campus. Just imagine for a second that JR had been handed the starting job the day he came on campus and with no coaching, no OL, and no defense was expected to lead the team because of his five star rating as a recruit. After redshirting, Russell was still unprepared to lead the team. Booty still made coaches All SEC his true sophomore year, even though he was lited as Junior. With all the resentment and discension on the team he gave it his best shot. Unfortunately for him it was Rohan's team and due to the NCAA eligibility window he had to make a choice.
Booty ranks down there with Jamie Howard, in my opinion. 1. Matt Mauck - Won a NC title. Didn't make huge mistakes. 1. Rohan Davey - Great passing talent that was hard to bring down and knew how to buy time. 2. JaMarcus Russell - Very good arm strength. Can be somewhat erratic at times, but seems to come through when it really counts. Through all my frustrations with him, he has come through and is a good QB. 3. Marcus Randall - Aweful... just terrible, but a nice guy, I guess. Good runner. 4. Josh Booty - Horrendous in my opinion. Sadly, the last games I was able to watch in Tiger Stadium had this guy as the starter. I saw the UAB interception end the game... horrible. Perfect example of a guy who shined against D-II schools and whatever good he did do was because of the good talent around him.
