The Opelousas paper reported on August 11 that Randall has not been named starter for Oregon State as some newspapers reported two days ago. Saban just reiterated what he said in the spring, "It's Randall's job to lose." The three quarterbacks are sharing the reps equally. Glen Davis told the Gonzales paper on August 11 that he was expecting hazing from the older players but it has been just the opposite. There is no hazing and the upper classmen have taken the freshmen under their wing. Dorsey says it they are treated like brothers (guidance from a big brother who has been through it). Dorsey also said that all of the players are working incredibly hard to be the best they can be.
Glenn Dorsey is listed at 6-2 and #300. It would take a brave individual to try and haze him. Rest assured Nick Saban has had a hand in fostering the "big brother" mentality. Hazing etc. would only be a distractrion and something Nick would not put up with. Never understood true hazing in any context. I saw evidence of it when I was at LSU and it ain't pretty. RE out starting QB this season. I've said it before, I don't care who he is as long as we win.
I have not seen or heard anyone (other than some fans) say Randall will start the first game. Everyone is saying, including Saban, that Randall is the number one QB right now. Much can change before the first game, but unless Randall stinks up fall practice, he'll start against OSU. The question is, will he perform well enough to hang onto his job?
I don't think Saban can come out and declare that he's the starter before they've even had a week of practices under their belts. One of the things I'm sure he tells top recruits like Russell is that they have at least the chance to come in and compete for the starting position right from the get go. If he were to close the competition off now, how couls recruits believe him when he said that in the future? Besides, nothing wrong with setting a fire under a guy's butt to push him by keeping it an open competition. He can say that Randall is the first stringer for now, but he can't say that's who'll be the starter against Oregon St.
Exactly, Saban has not named a starter, only the guy that is ahead at that point, i don't know where you got your info from Max. Now most reporters have said that they expect Randall to be the opening day starter but no one quoted Saban as saying he would be.
This is not news. Every article you read has Saban saying It is Randall's job to lose. Randall is the starter today. The one thing I've learned over the years is how hard it is to communicate. I've had face to face meetings and memos. Still people come back the next day and I hear differing accounts of what was said in the meetings or in the memo. It really depends on what you what to get out of the articles I guess. We will be seeing these Randall post thru out the year. If he is starting and doing fine it will be "I told you so". If he has a bad day, get ready for the storm. If he loses the job "I told you so". Randall is in a very tough position. Between the rock and the hard place.
Accepting the freshmen is a very intelligent thing to do for many reasons, not the least of which being a number of these true freshmen really need to contribute immediately, especially at WR.
