    LOCAL DRILL: Randall Gay
    Sunday, October 17, 2004

Former LSU defensive back Randall Gay is playing cornerback for the New England Patriots. Earlier this week contributing writer Nick Pope had a chance to talk with him about his first season in the NFL.

What's it like starting your professional career with the defending Super Bowl champions?

"Well, you're new to everything. You've been in college for a couple years, and that's how your mindset's always been. Now you don't know what's going on. You're using a 'wait and see' attitude with everything. Coming to a Super Bowl champ everybody's good, so you've just got to step your level up just to be able to practice with these players."

This season you have been playing a lot of special teams. Is that something you like doing?

"I like playing. Football is football, whether it's special teams, offense, defense, whatever. It's all part of the game."

LSU seems to be churning out a lot of NFL defensive backs. Why do you think that is?

"One reason is LSU's coach, Coach (Nick) Saban. He spent all the time (at practice) with defensive backs. He was with us like 85 percent of the practice, teaching us the technique. We had a real good coach in college."

What can we expect from today's game against Seattle?

"A hard-fought game. Us playing like we want to play, trying to come out on top."

Does the idea of having a perfect season ever cross your mind? Do you think the Patriots might be the next '72 Dolphins?

"Well, not mine, because I've only been here for a couple games. All this streak stuff to me is nothing because I wasn't here for it. None of that goes through my mind. I'm just trying to make it here another day."

My nephew went to Brusly High and played with him, so I have watched him develop since he was a freshman by attending all the games, and talked to him pretty much after each game. I can't begin to say how proud I am of this kid.

Blue is one of my favorite LSU players. Hope some high school DBs read the article and realize why they should come to LSU to learn. Randall was the third CB on the National Championship team and he is having success as a rookie in th NFL ! Amazing !

My dad was Randall Gay's father's high school coach at Brusly in the mid-70's. We're always interested to see how he's done.
