When a team has a situation as LSU (2-Freshman QB’s) in which one is a probable starter next season “provided Matt does go on to dental school and does not play. How does the staff prepare the freshman QB for reading the defense in order to spot a blitz or man coverage? For instance, after they are half way through spring/Fall practice, does the “D” start giving different looks during scrimmages to observe the response of the QB as part of preparation?
I'm not a coach, but I think a well prepared QB has to know all the recievers routes just for such situations. Even NFL QB's don't always pick it up. Most blitz's are obvious, so it's really a matter of how much time and repetition is spent on it in practice. The coaches go over what plays to 'check off to' when the QB recognizes it. You've probably seen some QB's with a cheat sheet taped to their wrist. If a team blitz's, it means the secondary is likely in man to man coverage. A good reciever will notice the blitz also and run a predetermined route. All of this is practiced on relentlessly. Some coaches place a lot of emphasis on it and some don't. Coaches should prepare a freshman by showing him different blitz's and styles. Easier said than done. Knowlegable coaches and repetition are best way to learn how to pick up the blitz.
