I know that Saban's approach will now be to stay with who is hot but I have not liked the scripted approach at all. 15 predetermined plays for each QB to run. I think this idea in and of itself causes problems. It can not be used to create momentum as the QB's will reach the end of their script and feel like they are hitting a brick wall. As we can see from AU this did not work and once outside of the script neither QB was comfortable. It makes it very hard for athletes to make things happen. The QB focus on the potential outcomes of the play so much and practice it so much that if the play is broken then the play is dead as they can't make something when they are focusing too hard to execute the play. It also takes away from the flow of the game. Play calling is about reacting to the way the defence is playing and exploiting their weaknesses. Scripting makes this impossible and trying to create a flow in the second half doesn't work. Just my 2 cents but when we settle on a QB I won't miss this one bit.

And one more thing, if Randall is a senior and knows the offence so well then why the hell did they have to script plays for him? Why not just leave him in for 15 plays and that be that. And don't even get me started on audibles...argh!!!! Go AWAY SCRIPTING!!!!!!!!

I was one who posted the 15 play quote from Saban.

...at halftime of the AU game. I don't remember Saban saying that they scripted the plays that would be run, only that they had decided that each QB would get 15 snaps and then the other would get a shot. If I misrepresented that, my bad. So the 15 plays determined when the substitution would take place and not that 15 specific plays had been chosen. I don't think scripting your opening drive is all that bad, it can give you a game plan for the BEGINNING of the game, of course you have to go with the flow and feel of the game.

It sure worked for Joe Montana and Steve Young for a long time. And of course the scripted plays were about the only 2 drives in the game that were successful. Maybe they ought to do just the opposite of what you suggest and script the entire game.

How many time do you see offenses that have not looked good at all, suddenly get into two minute drill time and all the sudden bulbs are glowin on the score board.

those plays are scripted for the most part, plus it keeps the defense on it's heels.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to script 15 plays that the entire offense knows in order and go no huddle on the opening drive. This would create match-up problems, and limit the decisions that the quartebacks have to make.

I was going to post the same thing. Bill Walsh used to script plays to begin every game. They stuck to those plays. If plays can be scripted for one of the best qb's to ever play I think it's good enough for Marcus Randall. Let's stop second guess things Saban does just because we lost. The scripted plays were in the first quarter. Scripting the plays didn't cause us to lose.

They were talking about scripting plays during some NFL game I was watching last weekend and the offensive coordinator scripted the first 17 plays. When asked why 17 he said that was because there were 17 lines on the paper he used to script the plays.

    LOL.

It is not really that odd for coaches to script plays, for the most part the plays that are scripted are the ones the Ocoor uses to see how the defenses react and which set of plays may work throughout the game.

You can bet no matter which plays are scripted the coaches will call the play that fits that current situation. If play #5 is a run up the gut, yet the situation is 3rd and 8, they will most likely call something that fits the 3rd and 8 situation, instead of scripted play #5.

For the most part you script plays to create a balance between run/pass and seeing how the defense reacts to certain sets.
