When in the spring I had said that Urban Meyer would do what Spurrier did against us in 1996, I got red dots and a lot of verbal abuse. Just wonder how many people now agree with me? I watch a lot of football and had watched every Utah game last season and I had watched Oklahoma State vs Texas and also some other Ok State games. What Meyer did at Utah was sensational considering that he did not have much talent to work with. Considering the speed he now has at Florida, short of Georgia, I do not see any problem. He can run the table. Also if you have seen his offense at the Kentucky and Tennessee game you have yet to see him in full flow. He might make a play for the NC this year, and again he might lose to Georgia. But give a couple of years and he will take the Gators to an NC. A good head football coach should have a core competence, something in which he is the best. For Meyer, Spurrier, Petrino it is the offense. For Saban it was the master defense. That is why when selecting a head football coach it is best to select such a person. Thats why I liked Petrino over Miles. The problem with coach Les Miles is that he does not have any core competence. He is more like an overseer. Petrino might have been upset this week but make no mistakes he will be back to win the big east. Just imagine with Petrino as head coach he would have put 50 against this Tennessee team. Simply picking someone from a mid major in a BCS conference sharing a state with a perinial national power is not a good way to select a coach. What we need is a ambitous young man in his mid to late 40s with a focused type A personality who cares not about purple and gold traditions, us fans, media or anything else but only about winning, because thats all that matters. He will go out and go to work recruiting, planning schemes etc. A man who is brilliant and dedicated and will accept no less from his players. No matter how many times we make ourselves believe that the defense or offense will improve and we will win a NC with this kind of leadership, it will not happen. We recruited so well the last few years because people wanted to play for Nick Saban. Weak leadership will not attract talent. You guys can go ahead and add a few more red dots against me! If a couple of red dots get LSU a SEC championship or a NC I can take a million of those.
I predict that Skip and some TAF have a few hints to pass along to the staff. Nothing rude of course and no threats, just a general " we hope you fix this flat tire soon" type pep talk. You know the kind that has underlying tones that suggest a better prepared staff and team? Oh they wont say anything publiclly, support will be strong. BUT I'm sure with as much as there is at stake ( this is big time college ball here ) as much as there is at stake here, recruits, TV dollars, etc... Skip and TAF will ask Miles if he needs help getting his flat fixed.... and I'm sure he will say no I can handle it..... and hopefully he will.... or after a year of flat tires, they'll get a new tire changer.
