My dear old Mom fell and broke a hip in September and is back home now, but still needing home health care and is recovering slowly. She just doesn't have the stamina to do all of the standing and walking to prepare big meals yet, much less a traditional holiday feast. So this year, I plan to order something and bring it up to her. Stuff that we just need to heat up and serve. She wasn't a big fan of the turducken I brought her once. And I've thought of ordering a fried turkey and still might. But lately I've been getting catalogs from smoked meat companies and they are offering a bunch of pretty good-looking and good-sounding smoked hams, cured hams, honey-roasted hams, tenderloins, and other tasty holiday feast items. Anybody have any luck with mail-order hams? How good are they and what companies are the best? What about side dishes? Got any ideas for the Redster?
We always get our Hams from HoneyBaked. There is one in N.O., so we pick ours up, but according to their site they do ship. Their Boneless turkey is pretty good too. Browse around. http://www.honeybakedonline.com/HBOnline/shop/category.asp?Ref=7614565:465324174 We used to get ours from Logan Farms until they shut down in Metairie after the storm. They are also really good and it looks like they ship too. http://www.loganfarms.com/
If you want a turkey, a buddy of mine ordered from this place in Tyler, TX (shipped to Chicago.) He said the bird was unbelievably good. http://www.gobblegobble.com For a ham, I've had good luck with Honeybaked Hams as well. The key is getting your order in, as it's tough to get one on short notice around Thanksgiving. Be warned -- their dressing/stuffing is terrible. Kind of a sweet cornbread thing. Blech.
