Marcus Randall If Saban keeps Randall as the starter, he should secretly install the option but wait until the Auburn game to disclose it. Randall has the potential to be a good option quarterback and if Auburn is not prepared for it we could have great success with it. If Auburn adjusts to it and can takes it away, go to our regular offense. Marcus Randall Passing: 7 Completions, 18 Attempts, 1 Touchdown, 66 yards, 1 Interception, 0 for 7 3rd Down Conversions in the First Half What follows is Randall's pass attempts including passes that were negated because of penalties. I assess at the beginning whether each pass was good, bad, or horrible. Of his twenty pass attempts, I only saw four passes that I would rate as good plus one shovel pass. Six horrible passes. Seven bad passes. And, two passes he just threw away because of the pass rush. Pass Attempt 1: Horrible pass! Interception. Leaves his feet to throw. Gives Oregon State the ball on the LSU 23. LaRon Landry saves the day by intercepting Anderson right after. Pass Attempt 2: Good pass. Rolls right. Pass complete to Bowe. Pass Attempt 3: Horrible pass over Bowe’s head. 15 yard curl. Pass Attempt 4: Bad pass behind Bowe. Bowe makes a great catch and runs 67 yards for a touchdown, which is called back due to an illegal shift. Pass Attempt 5: Bad pass. Throws into double coverage. Deep for Davis. Way overthrown. He was hit after he threw it in Randall’s defense. Pass Attempt 6:Bad pass behind Green but Green makes the catch on the bubbl screen Pass Attempt 7: Bad pass. Rolls right throws too high for Addai. Potential though not probable interception batted away by Addai. Pass Attempt 8: Good pass. Swing pass to Vincent. Pass Attempt 9: Horrible pass. Bubble screen to Early Doucet. Way overthrown. Pass Attempt 10: Does not count as good, bad, or horrible. Throws the ball away into the ground due to rush. Maybe he could have eluded the rush. Then again, he could have thrown an interception or held it too long and been sacked. Pass Attempt 11: Horrible pass. Came out sideways. Way under thrown. Lands in the dirt five yards short of receiver on fifteen yard pattern. Pass Attempt 12: Bad pass. Play action throws deep for Doucet who had his man beat but the pass is slightly overthrown. Holding penalty nullifies this after the play. Pass Attempt 13: Good pass. Ten yard completion left to Davis. Pass Attempt 14: Bad pass. Easily could have been intercepted. Thrown into double coverage into the endzone. Pass Attempt 15: Good pass. Screen to Vincent. Pass Attempt 16: Does not count as good, bad, or horrible. Throws the ball away out of bounds due to pass rush. Some boos. Pass Attempt 17: Horrible pass. Overthrows on an out pattern. Comes back in toward the end of the fourth quarter and takes a delay of game penalty. Pass Attempt 18: Bad pass. Complete! Addai comes back to catch it though. Pass Attempt 19: Horrible pass. Way overthrown to Doucet in the endzone. 3:01 to play in regulation. Pass Attempt 20: Complete but not really a pass. It was a shovel pass to Addai for a couple of yards. Randall did nothing really when he came in during the fourth quarter for Russell. Randall comes in for cramped Russell to scramble for a six yard touchdown in overtime. He is a good runner. Option quarterback, if he remains the starter. He is not and will never be a good passer at LSU. Jamarcus Russell Passing: 9 Completions, 26 Attempts, 2 Touchdowns, No Interceptions, 145 Yards What follows is Russell's pass attempts including passes that were negated because of penalties. I assess at the beginning whether each pass was good, bad, other, or horrible. Of his twenty-nine pass attempts, I saw nineteen passes that I would rate as okay or better. Only four horrible passes. Only five bad passes. Crowd cheers as Russell enters the game in the second half. Pass Attempt 1: Horrible pass. Left out pattern into double coverage. Could have been intercepted. Pass Attempt 2: Does not count as good, bad, or horrible. Should have been sacked used great athleticism to avoid sack. Threw the ball away. Pass Attempt 3: Good pass. A little low but hit Addai in both hands and bounced out. Pass Attempt 4: Bad pass. Out pattern right. Overthrows the receiver slightly. Pass Attempt 5: Ok pass. Bubble screen to Green incomplete should have been caught. Pass Attempt 6: Ok pass. Good catch by the reciver. Pass Attempt 7: Great pass. Caught by Addai on an out pattern. Pass Attempt 8: Good pass. Caught by Addai on bubble screen. Pass Attempt 9: Very good pass. Caught by Addai. Skinny post for big completion. Fourth completion in a row. Pass Attempt 10: Bad pass. Difficult throw. Overthrows receiver on fade. Pass Attempt 11: Great pass. Fade caught by Green for a touchdown. Very difficult throw. Pass Attempt 12: Bad pass. Thrown a little behind Bowe, but announcer says Bowe should have caught it. Pass Attempt 13: Great pass. Incomplete just dropped by Addai on left out pattern. Pass Attempt 14: Horrible pass. Browner should have intercepted it. Green on button hook. Announcers say that Browner held Green is the reason the play didn’t work. Not called by officials. Pass Attempt 15: Good pass. Russell slips but still delivers a strike straight ahead to Vincent. Pass Attempt 16: Great pass. Incomplete. Goes right through Addai’s hands. Pass Attempt 17: OK pass. Could have been caught by Bowe but a little behind him. Pass Attempt 18: Should have been a fumble but the officials rule it an incomplete pass. Ball slipped out of Russell’s hands. Pass Attempt 19: Horrible pass. Incomplete. Rolling right way overthrown. Pass Attempt 20: Great pass. Complete to Bowe out pattern right. Pass Attempt 21: Horrible pass!!! Fourth down and goal 2:47 to play. Had to loft it over the defender, but he had horrible touch. Overthrows wide open Skyler Green. If Skyler Green was 6’2’’ or 6’3’’ instead of 5’9’’ it would have been caught though. Skyler Green limps out. Looks hurt. Pass Attempt 22: Bad pass. Incomplete. Floated too long and almost intercepted but ball thrown to receiver. Pass Attempt 23: Ok pass. A little high for Vincent. Pass Attempt 24: Good pass. Bowe takes the good pass and runs forty yard gain. Pass Attempt 25: Great pass. Bowe runs it in for a thirty-eight yard score to make it 13-15. Athletic run for two point conversion to tie the game with 1:05. The score is now 15-15, which seemed so improbable just two plays earlier. Russell has “it.” Pass Attempt 26: Good pass. In overtime, complete to Vincent. Pass Attempt 27: Good pass. Risky floated it up caught by the receiver out of bounds in the endzone. Play negated by defensive holding by the strongside linebacker. Pass Attempt 28: Bad pass. Announcer said it was definitely catchable. Just off the finger tips of Bowe. Pass Attempt 29: Ok pass. Floats it just out of reach of the receiver in the endzone but he did it to avoid a sack. Risky throw but difficult throw. Russell leaves the game again due to cramps. Drink water knucklehead. That goes for Jesse Daniels as well. Joseph Addai Addai did more bad than good with ample opportunities, but he has the potential to be a poor man's Devery Henderson. 5 receptions for 65 yards 2 rushes for 13 yards Kick return 1: Very average. Gained a few yards and was tackled by the first man. Kick return 2: Bad. Fumbles the catch out of bounds. Rush 1: Excellent sweep left gains first down. Makes first guy miss spins. Reception 1: Incomplete. Randall threw it too high for him. Reception 2: Incomplete. Hit him in both hands and bounced out. A little low from Russell but should have been caught. Reception 3: Complete. Great pass from Russell. Reception 4: Complete. Good pass from Russell. Reception 5: Complete. Addai does a good job coming back on the skinny post. Reception 6: Incomplete. Addai should have caught it. Reception 7: Incomplete. Goes right through Addai’s hands. Rush 2: Pretty good run. For a short first down. Reception 8: Bad pass. Complete! Addai comes back to catch it though. Reception 9: Average run. (Shovel pass) Bowe is our #1 receiver not Skyler Green but Green is clearly the #2 ahead of the other receivers. You will learn soon enough. Bowe has the potential to be as good as Clayton for us. As for the officiating: LSU had as many bad calls hurt them as Oregon State had hurt them.
I knew Bowe was potentially our best receiver and he is showing it. It was one of the few bright signs of the night, but a VERY IMPORTANT ONE. That fills a big void. Now we need some consistency from a 3rd receiver after Skyler, and that may be Addai. He has to learn to be more consistent catching the ball, but he is gettin open. I think Doucet makes a splash very soon. Getting held twice by the DB is a very good sign. Receiving corps looks like it will be just fine.
So I was not drinking too much! In a different thread I wrote that JM had many passes that were good and dropped - particularly to Addai. Thanks for the post.
Yeah Russell's stats are a bit misleading. I just hope we don't drop a bunch of passes cuz he zings it too hard. Potentially a problem.
Bowe is going to be huge. Give him that TD that was called back and he has about 180 yards and 2 TDs for the game. Early was getting open against a very good secondary. Green will be OK once he is back to 100%. He would had had 2 TD catches if Russell had thown a pass my granny could have completed. Addai may very well become that great #3 receiver but I am not as yet completely sold on that. I would like to see more passes to TE David Jones to utilize his considerable skills as another dimension of a potentially potent passing game. AND! We haven't even seen the X Man in action! Its a shame that Randall can't achieve any consistency. I have seen him play well enough in some games that I know he does have some talent and it would have been a big bonus for the Tigers if he could have stepped up where Matt Mauck left off but it looks like that is not to be. It would be interesting to know who gets the most reps at QB in practice this week.
Russell does need to learn to put some touch into some of his short passes but he dosen't throw any harder than Brett Favre and Favre's receivers catch the ball. Russell's receivers are going to have to adjust to the point where they can catch a hard thrown football.
Yeah that's just it. If they don't learn to adjust, we have a problem. I am thinking they will, but you never know if this problem will persist the entire year long. Russell has a stronger arm than Favre. That's for damn sure.
Maybe he does now. He is 19 and Favre is 34. But what about all those years when Favre was in his 20's and had a cannon for an arm. He still throws it pretty hard.
