I e-mailed PETA a few weeks ago about Mike the Tiger... They responded today...in typical PETA save the rainforest fashion...thought yall might enjoy it I know I did Thank you for your e-mail. While this cat’s caging may be better than some, it is still a far cry from the natural environment of an animal who roams hundreds of miles. Accredited sanctuaries housing big cats typically measure enclosures in acres, not in feet. In addition to being cruel, keeping big cats as captive “mascots” poses a danger to students, staff, and spectators at sports events. The recent mauling of Roy Horn, of Siegfried & Roy fame (for more information, please visit http://www.circuses.com/sr.html), makes it clear that no amount of training can remove the instincts from these animals. Additionally, seeing big cats at ball games is the very sort of activity that inspires people to go out and get tigers as “pets”; spectators see them, find out they are cheap and easy to obtain, and acquire one, with little thought about how to securely—or humanely—confine a large and dangerous wild animal. Re: Re: PETA e-mailed me back today... Well, I think the point they were trying to make is that they aren't in support of the new home either. They won't be happy until he's out in the wild where he wouldn't be able to survive. It'd be the equivalent of having my house cat thrown out into the wild.
