I watched the Urban Meyer show today which recapped the gators win against Miss. St. and they had at least 4 or 5 shovel passes against a zone blitz that broke open for big yards. I was in Nashville and we certainly looked fast both from the box and in the secondary...but how will that same style match up against this scheme? Is Bo's cushion equipped to contain the 5 yd. shovel in the cushion? Incidentally, my sleep schedule is off so I'm officially starting to drink for the game.
Me too! I think our defensive line is much stronger and much faster than MSUs, and I think they will break up a lot of plays before they even get a chance to develop. Im more worried about the deep ball than anything else. Leak didnt look very impressive against a good SEC defense like Alabamas, but he still has big play ability, and is a threat to throw to the endzone every time he has the ball. We should be able to prevent them from moving the ball consistently, but if we cant stop the big play, they may be able to keep the game close, even with a relatively ineffective offense.
Maybe I'm overly optimistic, but it felt like the players (Prude included) were starting to grasp and buy into Bo's system in the secondary. I'm hoping we can count on speed and (finally) an understanding of the D scheme to prevent some of the deep threat.
No, I really feel the same way. Im just not completely sold yet, and if I had to pick an area of concern, it would be defense against the long ball. I am a big fan of Prude, for sure, I think he will be a star by the end of the year (and who knows, maybe Saban will draft him :thumb: ). If we press and get good pressure with our D line (and with blitzes), we should be just fine.
Great post! LSU will likely be susceptible to both the shovel pass and the quick slants to that big ****ing TE, wutzhiznameiforgotit ... and I look for FLA to test LSU with both early and often ... and, FLA will likely keep using the same plays over and over, especially on 3rd down until LSU learns to spot it, stay home and stop it ... I also expect FLA to go long early on first down ... injured shoulder, my arse. Watch Leak uncork one about 50 yards on the first play ... don't be surprised to see it.
Not quite sold on our defense yet...although they looked good the last 2 games, I will wait and see how we do again against a highly ranked opponent. I 'm hoping that Bo's D scheme is the real thing. Keeping my fingers crossed.:champs:
The shuttle pass out of the spread, and the option all together, is won by assignment football. You can just be in your area... you have to key on a man.. so a LB is matched up on the shuttleback, the DE on the QB, and the corner or the safety on the pitchman... you also have to run alot of man coverage here, or you are open to plays where they run a shuttle-action, but throw downfield instead..
When you give up only 90-something yards passing vs Florida, and hold them to another 90-something yards of rushing, I say Pelini's defense is more than equipped to contain the shovel pass.....
