Russell will start. He has the tools. He knows the offense. Perrilloux will see the field in each half if we are ahead. He's too good to sit on the pine while learning the offense. Flynn will see the field in the 4th quarter of won games. He will also be the prime replacement if Russell goes down with an injury. Perrilloux will be too green for a while yet.
Red, I think you're right. In fact, one way Les and Jimbo can (will-?) sell this to the team in general and JR in particular is to make it mandatory: one series a half, for example. Taking JR out for just a series gives him some extra time with the coaches, so they can discuss in detail what's going on in the game---what's the defense doing out there, etc. Again, I still think we'll see a small set of plays just for RP, things that take advantage of his mobility but aren't too far outside the framework of the regular offense. Put him in some shotguns for QB draws, do designed play action rollouts, things of that nature. Personally, I think this setup is less invasive than last year's deal b/c it's part of a plan. JR isn't looking over his shoulder each time he overthrows a WR, for example, and he won't get too shaken up when Coach says it's time for RP's series. Yeah, sure, in a perfect world Coach Miles would love to redshirt RP, but he knows deep down that's not gonna happen. The fans alone would cry bloody murder if he didn't make an appearance in, say, a 41-0 blowout of N. Texas just because Miles didn't want to lose a redshirt.
Yeah, I think the rule is that he can play in the first three games but not at all after that. Even playing after the third game, there is still a possibility of redshirting if there is some sort of extreme circumstance that can be appealed.
I think JaMarcus will start off OK and and get better as the season progresses. He remind me on Rohan in his motion and size and deep ball (need a little more touch). And for those of you that forgot ole Ro had a tuff time in the begining of his carrer.
Russell starts (RP may very well be the more athletic, and may very well have the better skills, but it all boils down to being able to react to the speed of the college game, where JaMarcus holds the advantage and will until obviously RP gets into his first actual college game, vs a reputable defense and performs well). Russell is the starter vs UNT. Flynn may very well be the "backup" for UNT, but I wouldn't be surprised if RP comes off the bench before Flynn. I think in the early going in the season, Russell and Flynn would get the "start" over RP, but RP comes off the bench before the backup (if that makes sense.... if not, this is what I mean: Lets say Russell starts vs UNT. Flynn is considered the backup but if Russell goes down with an injury, pending we're winning, the RP is actually the first to come off the bench and only gets replaced by Flynn if he struggles to move the offense. If Russell is hurt and can't make a start in the early going of the season, then Flynn starts, but RP comes off the bench (similar to last year's rotation between Randall and Russell). One way or another, I believe RP will get a lot of playing time this year. Either he'll win the job as the season progresses, or Russell just starts off with a bang and never gives anyone an opportunity to replace him as the starter, and if that's the case, then RP enters games in the 2nd half to finish off the opposition while continuing to grasp the college game speed (i.e. he won't be put in a game to hand the ball off....if RP's going in a game, it's going to be to throw, run and show his stuff).... ....that's just my take. But the safest bet that I can think of is that all 3 QB's get playing time this year--perhaps not in the same ratio as last year (thank god), but I think all of them have a minimum of 15 pass attempts..
No no. Sorry....by the end of the season, our 3rd QB will have attempted a minimum of 15 passes for the season. It'll be far less than what our 3rd QB finished with last season, but then again, I don't intend for us to be in the same "rotating QB" situation, either.
