Some folks on this board have correctly asserted that people within the LSU community - or at least those familiar with the LSU sports tradition - should have had a hand in the design. Sounds like Pete Boone is doing that at Ole Miss ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ole Miss turns to fans for mascot By Kyle Veazey The Commercial Appeal (Memphis) Replacing former Ole Miss mascot Colonel Rebel became more fan-friendly this week. After a $30,000 study by New York-based Phoenix Group didn't produce a mascot to the school's liking, athletic director Pete Boone announced plans for a contest in which fans will design the school's next mascot. The winning design will earn its creator a $5,000 prize and two club-level football season tickets for three years. "The decision to replace the 20-year-old mascot with a new, energetic, vibrant figure has generated a great deal of interest," Boone said in a statement released by the school. "We've decided to open up the process for people to send us their suggestions and let our supporters have a voice in the selection." Boone announced in June that Colonel Rebel would no longer represent the school's sports teams. The search calls for the use of the school's colors and a Rebel figure Ñ though there's no specifics on just exactly what that is. Contest rules describe a Rebel as "a figure who demonstrates a fighting spirit, exhibits independence and challenges the status quo." Contest rules and entry forms are available at www.olemisssports.com/contest. The school's 18-member Committee of Intercollegiate Athletics will pick three finalists following a Sept. 8 deadline for entries. Officials are hoping to select the winner by late September.
I think it sucks they got rid of the old one. And they did it for all the wrong reason. Also why is a New York company doing anything with the SEC. I have said it before and I am not ashamed to say it now, I dont like our new logo.. when I see it I get compelled to scream "Thunder Cats GO !!!!" Like the font though. Wish we could download that font.

I've got a mascot for Old Piss How 'bout Richard Simmons. He can "come out" before every game and shout, "Hoidy Toidy, Boys!!!" They can refer to themselves as the "Fighting Dicks" - "Dick," of course, being short for RICHARD!!!
I concur that our new logo sucks. I get aggravated looking at it on the new NCAA game. I like what EA used last year (NCAA 2003), the yellow tiger head on a purple background.
