See attached link. I wonder what the creative folks on this board can come up to "help" Eli U. come up with something appropriate? http://www.southernsportstonight.com/article.asp?IDNum=339
Col. Reb is a little dated, but so is "Ol Miss", so what? Leave them be, a little tradition doesn't hurt anything, and changing it would serve no purpose, just ask the people @ USL, ULL ,UL ,ULA LA or whatever , no wonder the cajuns are ragin!
I just hope they don't change it to some "politically correct" name like "The Ole Miss Sniveling Liberals" or "The Multiculturally Diverse" Heres' an idea - The Mustangs Not the horse, the car. Or the Monte Carlos or the Dodge Rams. Could have the vehilcle of the name they choose on the helmuts and probably get gobs of money from Ford, General Motors or Chrysler. Hey with all the embarassment Alabama is going through maybe they should change their name from The Crimson Tide to The Crimson Faces
They could return to the politically-neutral "Flood," their original mascot. Here's a little history I found on their nickname, mascot, etc. http://dm.olemiss.edu/archives/97/9703/970321/970321N8olemiss.HTML
Its getting more and more depressing as the years go on. It seems like people are trying to make us forget the Civil War. They keep eliminating all symbols whether "offensive" or not. I have many direct relatives that lived in and fought for the south in the states of Texas and Georgia. Slavery was a horrible instistution but it's just one thing in a huge spectrum of the south. Sorry for going on a bit of a tangent but it's just getting depressing.
I guess LSU exercised considerable foresight by choosing a mascot that, despite the reference to a Confederate regiment, carried an alternate meaning in the form of the animals, not the soldiers. That's tough to do with a name like Rebels.
Well said. If we don't watch out, we'll all have to move back to Europe to make everything the way it was before Columbus arrived...
It's not really their call. They should check with "The Reverend" to ensure he won't come down on them. I'd just call them "The Mannings".
It's important to remember we never had a civil war. The Confederate States were invaded and brutally destroyed. It makes since in this PC age to dsetroy one of the last vestiges of Southron (not a typo) sentiment. We should all fight to preserve the Ole Miss heritage that represents the United States as it should be, a loose collection of states, and not as it is, an empire of conqureed states.
