Ole Miss fan behavior at games needs improvement

As a lifelong Rebel fan and graduate of Ole Miss, I feel I must comment on the appalling behavior of both the University and the fans at this weekend’s super regionals. First, the University oversold the game.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of unsuspecting fans bought standing-room-only tickets when there was absolutely nowhere to stand. The University took our money without actually providing a spot from which to watch the game. And, quite frankly, the result was an unsafe environment.

Even more appalling than the University’s behavior, was that of the fans, especially in the student section. I attended the game with my husband, who is a Texas alum and was wearing a UT hat. From the moment we approached the stadium, people were shouting obscenities at him. But even more disturbing was what happened when we walked into the right field area, desperately searching for any open space high enough to see over the wall.

We were immediately bombarded with comments like “get out Texas (expletive)” and some that are actually worse and can’t be included here. My husband did his best to ignore these vile comments, until one Ole Miss fan actually yelled at me “you too (expletive),” which was more than he could ignore, considering that I am 8 months pregnant and wearing Ole Miss gear.

Then about 30 students, who were of course, way up the hill, tried to taunt my husband into coming up there to fight them and defend my honor. I have never been more shocked and humiliated in my entire life. It was a very scary, threatening environment, and there was absolutely no security anywhere to be found.

I cannot describe the shock and embarrassment I felt that Ole Miss students would behave in this manner. I would never in my wildest imagination have thought that someone would be verbally assaulted and physically intimidated for wearing the opposing team’s hat to a sporting event. It’s just a game.

Behavior like this will forever tarnish the image Ole Miss has as a genteel, southern school. And, quite frankly, my enthusiasm for Ole Miss sports has forever been tarnished.

i did that last year when she had an auburn hat on. And all this time I've been bragging I ridded the world of an AU neck. Damn.

and then either A) pissed on it B) ate it C) pissed on it and then ate it, washing it down with a bottle of whiskey.

I would never in my wildest imagination have thought that someone would be verbally assaulted and physically intimidated for wearing the opposing team’s hat to a sporting event.

Screw killing her unborn child, we would have gone after both members and then their car.

Nah, the football program will ensure most people think of Ole Miss a genteel.

Well, just look what 4 years in Oxford did for this guy.....

This "fine young man" was up for the Heineken Trophy, not to be confused with the Heisman and he owes it all to Ole Miss.

I went 2 years ago when they had a good team. I was walking down the street, and I just got a "go to he!! LSU", so I just shot back and told the guy, "we'll see who's talking after the game." The guy puts his drink down, bows up to me, and asked did I want to fight.

OM fans are the kids at school who act tough until someone stands up to them, then they don't do anything when called on it. Had that guy in the Texass hat walked over to fight the group of OM students, I guarantee you no punches would have been thrown. They would have bowed up and acted tough, but never would have done anything about it.
