I love to see the return of traditional, hard-hitting defensive football in the SEC. Low-scoring games, a few big plays, the importance of field position and ball control have returned to the top SEC teams. Gone are the days of the Spurrier era’s score-as-many-point-as-we-can mentality. Saturday’s game looked like it could have been played in the ‘70s or ‘80s. The crowd can stay in the game longer because there are fewer big momentum swings and the support of the defense is key to winning. I love it.
Both Georgia and LSU have high powered offenses that score a lot of points. Each have tremendous playmakers that can score. Both teams will score a lot of points this year. What I saw of this game is how really good the defense is. I don't think the national media has really picked up on this fact. Both teams have incredible defenses to compliment the offenses. If both teams continue to play up to their potential, they will both be top 5 teams at the end of the season. I think you will see these two teams in Atlanta. :geaux:
That's a good thread starter. I like the run based/hard nose defensive style of ball we are playing as well. Before the Arizona game the announcers were saying that the knock on LSU was that we have always had fast players, but that they were not as big as today, or as physical. Saban has an old Big 10 game plan with SEC style players, and it works well. More than anything, under Saban, we have seen LSU play way more physical football than we have seen in the past.
I agree LSUfan. We have the size combined with speed. This defense is unlike any animal we've had here in the past. There was some hard-hitting, pounding like I haven't seen before from a LSU squad and they never let up. I really like what I see from our defense. I just hope everyone stays healthy.
Our game will be a close, low scoring, defensive one until the end of the 3rd quarter, then our guys will be tired out and ya'll will pile on the points. Just like our Miami and Tennessee performances. So, it'll be a good game for me until the 4th quarter. :cuss:
Tiger Football Oct 31 1959 The game Saturday reminded me of a time as a little boy in the south endzone on halloween night. The people who remember that game the most don't remember Billy running the punt back. They like me remember the south endzone where LSU stuffed probably the best team in the nation 12 times on the one yard line. I remember a linebacker called Billy Cannon hitting the gaps and stopping Ole Miss. I remember thinking John Vought is an idiot. I was 12 then, and I'm personally glad the defense is back. I have never in my life seen someone tip a pass in from out of bounds and catch it himself. But I've only watched LSU play for 50 years. I even loved them back in Auburn when Howard through every touchdown pass in the game; ours and theirs. Saban doesn't need a big head or he'll leave us, so don't say too much. We've been left too many times in the past.:geaux: :lsug:
Hey, its the first time I've been on this here board...but dont forget Cholly Mac's defenses of the late 60's with Mike Anderson, Gary Beban, Ronnie Estay, and arguably the best ever player at LSU in Tommy Cassanova. I remember when Neb and Jerry Tagge and friends ran up against the Tigers in the Orange Bowl in 70 or 71 and the Tigers d@mn near shut them down. Should have won that game
Old school SEC fotball... Yeah, somewhere ole Cholly Mac is looking down and smiling. This truly was a throwback game. BTW, it was George Bevan #42. GEAUX TIGERS!!!!!!! ldskule:
I agree, it did look old school. To me, what looked old school or old Auburn school to me was the size of LSU's d-linemen. I only say that because I am only really familiar with AU history. The Tiger interior linemen were true hosses. I remember a time when AU had d-linemen like that, but they along with the big rush DE's left Auburn about the time Dye left. It sure was fun to watch those big guys power through the o-line and then bat the ball down. That is awesome to watch and is both frustrating and intimidating to the Qb. You can see the disruption that it causes the offense. LSU's d-line is what I want my d-line to look like. I can see Tracy and David Rocker now. LSU had one guy that really looked and played like "The Rock" Tracy Rocker. Interior linemen? French name maybe? He put up a solid and sometimes dominating performance. That was a great win, but it is hard to compliment the rest of LSU's squad too much because the front 7 on the Tiger defense was just outstanding. That is really all that needs to be said. The rest of the team did their part but from my living room, it looked like the pride and joy in your Tiger Den was the defensive line. Again, great win for the LSU Tigers and for the SEC West. Dave
