    This would be my list.

    1. Patriots Defensive Coordinator Romeo Crennel
    2. Iowa Head Coach Kirk Ferentz
    3. Auburn Head Coach Tommy Tuberville
    4. Louisville Head Coach Bobby Petrino
    5. USC Offensive Coordinator Norm Chow
    6. Cal Head Coach Jeff Tedford
    7. Eagles Offensive Coordinator Brad Childress
    8. Boise State Head Coach Dan Hawkins
    9. Ravens Defensive Coordinator Mike Nolan
    10. Fresno State Head Coach Pat Hill

Are Bob Stoops, Pete Carroll, Steve Spurrier, and Mark Richt out of the question even if we pay them more money?

Bobby Petrino coaches in CUSA, please the thought of him coming to LSU is frightening. The LSU gig is one of the top jobs in college football. This isn't LSU football in the 80's and part of the 90's, think big people. If this job opens up, which I don't think it will, you have think big, a lot of people want it.

Butch Davis - Still not to crazy about that thought. Just doesn't sit right for some reason.

I would personally like to hire Rick Neuheisel to a contract that is very LSU-friendly. He did a really good job at Colorado and Washington. Give him an incentive-laden contract with a very small amount of guaranteed money; a huge buyout clause for him to go elsewhere; and a bunch of outs where LSU could get rid of him if it didn't work out without owing him a dime.

He is out of college football right now, but he is a good head coach.

    Neuheisel? get real.

As a visitor to this board from Weisel country let me say Neuheisel is not quite out of coaching, he is actually the qb coach for a high school team in Wash. state.
He is a good offensive coach and a creative guy, but the Weisel has left Colorado in shambles and in trouble with the NCAA, the Wash. program is in total disarray and a mess after the Weisel left.
Maybe he would work if you had 4 or 5 compliance officers looking after him and kept him on a very very short leash. Still if gambling is a big sport around campus, The Weisel may be your man.

    Really, in no particular order:

Romeo Crennel -- another Belichick defensive coordinator who's itching for a head coaching job.

Mike Riley -- does have Louisiana ties (asst. coach w/Saints) and seems to be a great character guy

Butch Davis -- definately a good recruiter and college coach. He rebuilt Miami and being he only needs to drive an already a solid machine

Rich Rodriguez -- another guy w/ LA ties. Has done a solid job at WVU

Mike Price -- built Wash. St., has TOTALLY built up UTEP. Given another chance at a major college program, I HIGHLY doubt he'll do anything remotely similar to what he did at 'Bama

Will Muschamp -- knows our players already. Good recruiter. Defensive minded and could, in theory, keep the majority of our coaching staff in tact.

    Jimbo Fisher -- *see above*

Spurrier -- hey, it doesn't hurt to ask, but I think he's DEFINATELY a long shot. He loves to golf, and South Carolina has better courses. Pebble Beach anyone??

Mike Shannahan -- there were already rumors about him being a possible candidate for the Florida job. The problem with him is wondering if he'll be interested in staying for the long haul.

The MO hiring Saban from Mich. St. in '99 was to find a head coach at a school in the middle of the pack in a BCS conference which realistically will probably not ever get a MNC shot. The thinking was that such a coach could be lured by the promise of coming to a school like LSU in the best conference in the country, at which you could legitimately have a shot to win the MNC. A name I haven't seen anywhere who fits this bill is Mike Bellotti at Oregon.

Makes less than $1 million per. Pro? Recruits pretty well in a state with a 2nd decent program, and little homegrown talent. Has been to the Rose Bowl recently. Con? Hits the Jucos a little hard, had a down year this year, and may have been propped up by the fact that Tedford was his OC during the ASmith & Harrington years. But he's a solid coach at a solid 2nd tier school in a big conference who LSU could get if they wanted.
