Why don't you read the whole excerpt. The man was talking about a racially charged woman and he basically had to "choose" friends of all backgrounds to be excepted as not just another "black man" ...
If you read the whole book, you'll understand the context. He was talking about his Freshman year at Occidental College and the wide range of things he was exposed to there as an 18-year-old including drugs, radicals, and other influences. He goes on to explain how he learned some ugly truths, got his act together and transferred to Columbia where he graduated magna cum laude. College in the 70's was like that. Even SabanFan took drugs and hung out with hippies and lewd women in college. Among my druggie acquaintances one became a wigged-out disciple of the Guru Maharaj Jai and another joined ROTC and became a friggin' Colonel in the Army. I myself became Yosemite Sam.
By the time I turned 40, I was done with that. Ayers (launched his campaign) Khalid (glowing praise in the midst of Jew bashing) Wright (bashed America in his presence for over 20 years) all speak otherwise for your golden boy.
Obama's choice of friends hasn't changed since then. Columbia university is a hotbed of anti-American, anti-Capitalist and anti-Israel radicals. It's probably one of the most if not THE most radical, anti-American, major left-wing university.
