    Chow considering move to NFL

    By CHIP ALEXANDER, Staff Writer

Many consider Southern California offensive coordinator Norm Chow the best assistant coach in college football, but that soon could change.
"I could be headed to the next level," Chow said this week. "That may be my next challenge."

Chow has been mentioned as a possible candidate for NFL jobs, including offensive coordinator of the Tennessee Titans. One Web site, gotitans.com , reported that Chow may have been offered as much as $1.5 million a year to go to the Titans -- about three times his reported annual salary at USC.

Chow, who served as N.C. State's offensive coordinator during the 2000 season when the Wolfpack went 8-4 and defeated Minnesota in a bowl game, didn't say which offer might entice him to leave college football. He had hoped to land a head coaching job but recently was rebuffed.

Chow, 58, interviewed for the Stanford job before Southern California ended the 2004 season by smashing Oklahoma in the national championship game. But the Cardinal hired Walt Harris, the coach at the University of Pittsburgh.

"That was disappointing for me," Chow said. "I really thought I could get the Stanford job, but I didn't come close."

Chow has acknowledged turning down only one college head job -- at Kentucky two years ago.

    "That's it," he said.

I wonder why Stanford went with Harris instead of Chow?
If Chow leaves, how will this effect people's perception of USC?
USC should still be a good team, but without Chow... Their offense is what they were praised for and I think we could be looking at a lot of people changing their guess of how USC does next year if he leaves.

With all of the talent they have on offense I think an OC would have to prove he wasn't going to be good before many people, especially the media, would change their opinion of what to expect of them next season without Chow. And although their O gets the glory the D won at least as many games for them last season and Carroll is right up their with the best when it coems to coaching defenses.

I would have gone with Chow over Harris.

I still cannot believe that only UK has offered him a HC position with all of the openings that have come up over the years.

If UK would have offered him the same amount of money they pay their basketball players he would have taken the job!

There has to be a reason why he has not been offered any big time HC jobs.
What it is, I don't know - but obviously there is something that keeps him from being an attractive candidate.
In situations like USC's, where they have a wealth of talent, all of a sudden, every assistant there is a superstar.
In any great program, it seems to me that there is usually more credit being thrown around than there should be.
A good example would be Bill Parcells. He was a "genius" as a Head Coach, but it sure helped to have Belicheck as his DC.
Now, look at New England.... is Belicheck the "brains" behind the success, or is it the OC or DC. We'll find out soon, because both of them are becoming Head Coaches. My guess is that Belicheck plugs in new guys and keeps rolling on. We'll see how the other two work out as HCs.
