I am late posting this, but I wanted to start a thread on what a classless jerk Donovan is. I was at the tourney on Friday. Donovan leaves most of his starters in until well under 4 mins, when the game was a 20+ pt lead and well in hand with about 12 mins left. He also called a TO with 5 and some change. I thought that at this juncture, he was calling a TO to empty his bench, something he didn't do. He proceeds to build a 40 pt lead, with multiple starters in the game. Other than perhaps he had a significant amount of money wagered on the game, I could see no reason for blistering an over-matched, and out of gas, JSU team. Bottom line, classless. If a walk-on can't get minutes in a 30+ pt blow out in the NCAAs, why should they continue to take a beating in practice day in and day out?:angryfire
I turned it on and saw them near 100 with the starters in. Its okay to have a couple, be had all of them in.
Yeah, it's indeed indicative of his character! The guy has always been crass and just rubs me the wrong way. However, he is a perfect fit for Florida.
That kind of behavior comes back to bite most coaches, though. Eventually it catches up with recruiting and can be divisive in the locker room. Oh well. What comes around goes around.
a bit harsh to call him classless and a jerk over this. he didnt pay $$$ to recruits, hire their parents, choke them, or send in a goon to kill an opponent (of course, as far as I know). many coaches do many worse things, plus, he is trying to win an NC. maybe he specifically wanted them to work on something.
Not to mention the possibility of one of his starters getting injured in that situation. Talk about look stupid.
This is march madness. If a coach can't play his starters and rotation as much as he wants to get them ready, what else can't he do?
There wasn't a lot to work on. The offense consisted of Green driving the lane and dishing for either a dunk or a three by Humphries/Brewer against a clearly inferior opponent. The displays in the second half were disgusting. There is winning with class, and winning without. This was clearly the latter. I don't think its harsh , to call it what it is. The other things you described have very little to do with coaching (and winning) with class.
On the other hand, yesterday in the Ohio St. Game I saw an 8 pt run in under 30 seconds. 20 points in 4 minutes isn't unrealistic.
