It amazes me to see the news media making the same mistakes they made when Andrew came through. They keep saying how lucky New Orleans is and how it escaped much damage before they even have seen the outer lying areas. Let me tell you the area below New Orleans and the suburbs are devasted but i keep hearing them say that Louisiana escaped. A major Cat 4 hit at Grand Isle and when they see the damage they will see that South La. has been hit really hard.
I think its because the media creates such hype surrounding any event. All you heard (or maybe all I heard) was how NO was going to be turned into Venice (not Venice, La. Ol' Dog...) When it didn't happen they had to explain it away by "luck".
The news media is nothing but a group of "Drama Queens" Fox is the leader. One of the coverages was about 10 minutes of the Anchors talking to the idiot in the field about him getting blown around and that he should put on these stupid goggles to protect his eyes from fling debris. Forget The probability it would probably knock or cut off his head. The entire video and conversation was about him. :dis:
HA! Did any of you watch FNC on Sunday afternoon? Shep Smith was walking on Bourbon with his cell phone asking folks why they were staying. One dude walking his dog said "None of your f***ing business!" Classic! :thumb:
speaking of "media ignorance"... Man, I was watching one station - ABC I think, and they were watching a video feed & ad-libbing live. IDIOTS. "Uh, gee, there appears to be some houses & err.. yards, I, I think this might be a residential area." No ****!??!! "(showing Lake Ponchatrain) Is that, that might be a lake..." No, it's a huge body of water next to New Orleans with a bridge going over it, but before the flooding it was a desert!
"Now Bob, we've just gotten new video of what appears to be a Coast Guard helicopter reeling in a stranded person from a rooftop. Can you help our viewers out and tell us what's going on?" "Well sure, no problem Janice. You see, what's happening is, a Coast Guard helicopter is reeling in a stranded person from a rooftop. From the looks of things, I would assume that the water rose too high in his house, which is why he is on the roof. Back to you in the studio." Friggin morons...
I was watching CNN and there was a reporter who nailed it and i dont know where she was from. But she couldnt talk without her voice cracking and when she described what she saw you could tell it will be with her the rest of her life. That is what this is about and she was in despair over the people she knew were being left behind because they didnt have enough help. I sit here and i cant help but think about the nice bed i can walk 10 steps to get in. Or the refrigerator or T.V. available. Then i get this picture in my mind of someone in their attic where it is hot. Screaming for help and knowing that they will be there all night. I dont want that person to lose hope. Because it isnt just one person. There are many people in this shape and most of the news media is saying how damn lucky they are because the damned French Quarter was spared. God Please get these people help and let them know everything is going to be OK. Help them keep a positive spirit and that in time things will look up.
Did anybody see the Edith Babineaux Bunker press conference (I think she has one every 20 minutes) where Mary Landrieu was standing behind her? Her face was twitching like a vibrator. Does she have Tourette's?
On the radio in BR yesterday morning when it was becoming clear that the worst of the storm was passing east of us, a female commentator was making remarks about "Katrina, the Gentle Giant" and seemed to be really pleased with herself for coining a clever name. I just thought, "You stupid bitch, just because its light damage here doesn't mean its not clobbering somebody east of here". They hire these people for their looks and their voices, not their brains.
