New OC is the biggest hire at LSU since Dinardo blew it hiring Lou Tepper

As many of you and myself included are enjoying the thrill of LSU up at the top of the football world the last 5 or so years, I think that who Miles replaces at OC has will have a huge effect on our successes in the next few years.

LSU has been very successful during a time that only Auburn has been a force in the west. Even though Arkansas had a great season last year, our only real competition to win the west during the last 6 years has been Auburn. Now the tables have turned with Arkansas coming on and of course Saban going to Alabama as well as Ole Piss and MOO U looking like they might have a heartbeat.

Although we are not in the same situation as we were in with Dinardo, he lost his two coordinators Carl Reese to Texas and Morris Watts to I think Mich State in the same year and brought in the imfamous Lou Tepper as well as an OC that I can't even remember. As you know, these replacements led to his demise and was fired soon after. My point is that a coach is only as good as the OC's working for him. Dinardo failed because of this. While Miles has made some good hires, I think his ultimate success and failure at LSU will be judged on what he does with this HUGELY important hire.

I agree with you. Hopefully Les saw Jimbo's departure coming and already has a few names in mind. We need someone who has a special talent for molding QB's. Flynn and Perrilloux have great potential, but neither is near ready for the SEC grinder. Heck, not even this year's Heisman Trophy winner was ready for ONE game versus a good SEC opponent, much less the 8 games that Flynn/Perrilloux will have to endure.

Yep, a big hire for Les.

we should also not forget how great of a recruiter that Jimbo was for us. Good players sure make coaches look a lot smarter.

Lets not forget that Miles is responsible for hiring Pelini, I trust that he will find the right guy to replace Jimbo.

This is what scares me about Miles being an offensive mind. What he did against Auburn could kill us down the road. That was not Jimbo calling that game. Miles was bound and determined to run the ball against Auburn and we lost because of that. We had the best receivers and QB in the country and blew it. The same could be said about the FLA game too. Jimbo had full play calling starting in the Tenn game forward. Look at the difference in our offense starting at that game forward.

This hire is going to be critical.
The OC's now have so much responsibility with calling plays, coming up with game plans, creating play books, and developing QB's. Now that out of the ordinary OC's are becoming more prevalent and getting a lot of attention, having a lot of unconventional looks and schemes is becoming more and more popular.
We need an OC that can develop a QB and teach them to read defenses and go through progressions. The QB is the key to a successful offense. It is nice to depend up on the running game but the running game is the easiest thing to shut down. Shutting down a good QB with accuracy and good reads with good WR's is much more difficult.
Les is going to want to run the ball more next season now that we have a couple of freshman that are studs. Fact is we run much more next season. Hopefully Les doesn't try and control the offense all the time and tie the hands of the OC.
What LSU needs for the offense:
    1) An established experienced OC that has a play book that utilizes LSU talents at WR, QB, and RB. Not a run first OC but an OC that runs to open the passing game up.
    2) An OC that can utilize a dual threat QB
    3) Les doesn't limit the OC or tie the OC's hands in play calling
    4) An OC that can really develop QB's.
    5) Les doesn't try to pound the ball and run all the time like he did 1/2 the season with less than 100% RB's before the frosh RB's were ready. I felt that Les really tried to limit Jimbo and run the ball too much earlier in the season. I felt it was run 1st then pass. Later in the season the run game was better but it seems the offense opened up more.

In the Auburn game, we kept trying to run the ball to no avail. We also ran it way too much against FLA... While most will say that to be a good passing team you have to establish the run... well we were getting smoked by Auburn and their DB's were suspect. Again, Jimbo did not call that game 100 percent as well as the FLA game. He did from the Tennessee game forward.

This is exactly what I am talking about. Fla just won the national championship by being a pass first run second offense. They used their speed to win. Great Wide receivers come to schools that have that philosophy.

Guys, I readily admit to being one who doesn't have absolute and complete faith in MIles in every aspect of running the program, but I am comfortable with him in this situation for one reason: Les doesn't seem to have any sort of an inflated ego, and consequently I don't think he'll hesitate to bring in the absolutely best guy we can get.
