So I was asked to write an article on the upcoming season in the school's newspaper. I am probably one of the four LSU fans at the school. So I tried to keep my fat mouth shut but here it is if you're interested. Head Coach: Les Miles 22-4 career record at LSU 1 SEC West Title 1 BCS Sugar Bowl Win Pre-season Ranking: Coaches: #2 AP: #2 Head coach Les Miles enters his third season in Baton Rouge with high expectations. His LSU Tigers are ranked a respectable #2 in both the coaches' and Associated Press polls. Les Miles on the high expectations “Having high expectations puts everybody on the same page,” Miles said. “Everybody in our program understands that if they do their role and perform that this team can accomplish great things.” LSU was also selected to win the SEC by the Media at SEC Media days in Birmingham, AL. On the All-SEC Team, LSU led all teams with eight selections followed by Kentucky and Florida with six each while Alabama, Arkansas and Tennessee each had five players on the 1st and 2nd teams. On offense LSU lost 3 players in the first round of the NFL Draft; QB JaMarcus Russell (#1 Oakland), WR Dwayne Bowe (#23 Kansas City), and WR Craig Davis (#30 San Diego). Although the Tigers lose those offensive stars they have senior leadership stepping in. Senior QB Matt Flynn has waited three years for his chance to shine as the LSU starter. Matt Flynn has one career start back in 2005 versus Miami in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. Matt finished the game 13-of-22 for 196 with 2 TD and he added 39 yards on the ground. At the wide receiver spot senior Early Doucet returns. Early pulled in 59 catches for 772 yards and eight touchdown last season as the #3 receiver. With senior RB Alley Broussard leaving the team, LSU will continue a running back by committee with senior Jacob Hester and sophomores Keiland Williams and Charles Scott sharing the load. Hester isn't the quickest back, but has the best vision and power of the three. Also, with former offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher leaving for Florida State, Les Miles hired offensive coordinator Gary Crowton from Oregon. Crowton was a head coach at BYU and Louisiana Tech before becoming the coordinator at Oregon. Look for LSU's offense to be more spread this season with Crowton calling the shots. On defense LSU returns three starters from the defensive front that gave up an average 97.1 yards a game on the ground. All-American DT Glenn Dorsey returns for his senior season to be the anchor of the defensive line. At the end spot, Junior Tyson Jackson returns. Jackson is a pre-season All-American as well. Both Dorsey and Jackson have been listed on the Walter Camp watch list which is the best player of the year award given at the end of the season. LSU loses both players at the safety spot. Four year starter Laron Landry was selected #6 in the NFL Draft to the Washington Redskins, and Jessie Daniels graduated. Senior Craig Steltz who has started in the safety role over his three years at LSU, steps in to replace Landry. Les Miles believes LSU will not miss a beat with Steltz in the secondary. LSU returns both shut-down corners in senior Chevis Jackson and senior Jonathan Zenon. Look for LSU's defense to be just as strong as last season's. Prediction: Most magazines and sports writers have LSU playing USC in the National Championship just 90 miles down the road in New Orleans. Although it is a possibility, it's tough getting through the SEC with just one loss, yet alone undefeated. My prediction for LSU's 2007 season: 13-1 with a BCS bowl. Losing to one of the big three on the schedule; Virginia Tech, Florida, or Auburn.
I like that you didn't include Alabama in your list of big three on the schedule. That should fire some gumps up. Give 'em hell boy. :thumb:
I just skimmed over it but seems to be on point. Way to rep. :thumb: If you get to do another, maybe throw work this in on Tiger Stadium: In the past 5 seasons (2002-2006) LSU is 32-3 in Tiger Stadium. Going 7 seasons back to 2000, LSU is 37-6 in TS. That’s pretty incredible when a team is averaging less than one loss a year @ home over a 7 year period, no matter what league, conference it’s in much less in the SEC.
Great write-up! You've got the sports journalism flow down. If you're looking to come to LSU for collegiate studies, (and you're even interested in journalism) the one thing the school paper doesn't skimp on is the sports (just ignore the 'tards fighting politics all the time). hey clair, I mean it- I really love Reveille sports!
Great article, I hope you got an A on it. :geauxtige :geauxtige :geauxtige :geauxtige :geauxtige :geauxtige
