Ok, got tired of fretting over his defense, so did substantial research on the guy. He has a very long history of being involved in defense, and has been a DC for many teams - most of them were pretty good. Here are some nuggets and comments I've found about him: Frank Beamer: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 18 years as a Defensive coordinator in 1A (gotta be doing something right in someone's eyes). Some highlights: Southern Miss DC 1980-81: 1980 #1 scoring defense (8.1 pts/game), 10th overall. 1982 #5 overall defense. SMU DC 1982-86 1982 #10 scoring defense 1983 #2 scoring defense (9.9 pts/game) 1982 SMU team defeated Pitt (Dan Marino) 7-3 to finish ranked #2 in polls - Marino's only game ever where the offense didn't score a TD Miss. State DC 1991-1995 1991 top 20 scoring defense 1992 top 20 scoring defense 1994 top 20 scoring defense UTEP DC 1996 Went from last in WAC to 2nd, #33 nationally U Alabama Birm. DC 1997-2000 2000 #9 scoring defense, #11 total defense 2000 UAB defense held LSU to 10 pts in 13-10 win (250 total yds) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok, so there you have it. The guy has a long record of being a defensive coach (over 26 years in all). He has had some impressive accomplishments, and it's apparent he does know how to run a defense given the wide variety of situations he's been in. Of course, he's had some flop years too..which doesn't speak well to how versatile his defenses are in regards to different types of players...but this is an optimistic thread, we can talk about that stuff later
Pretty good sugar coating for Bill. Sugar coat this.... Billy boy has not coached on a team which won a title of any kind in over 20 years. This year OSU - gave up 33 points to Ohio State in their Bowl game - was up 35-7 on Texas and choked it away by allowing 49 unanswered points.
three steps forward ... two steps back? thanks for the info ... one question though ... does the career path in schools seem kind of odd, considering that he held the same position (DC) in all the schools? 1. Southern Miss 2. SMU 3. Miss. St. 4. UTEP 5. UAB How does this guy go from being a DC in the Southwest Conference and the SEC ... then end up as a DC at UTEP and UAB? Unless he had personal reasons for those career choices, seems like a step backward for me.
Indications are that Clay is going to work in some other capacity rather than Defensive Coordinator, maybe administration.
Perhaps all Clay needs is the right personel to run his defense--something that perhaps OSU lacked, but obviously, we have the players to make it work??? That being said, I'd still like to keep Muschamp as the DC and have Clay coach LB's. At least for next season. If Miles wants to keep his OSU assistants (he's insisted that they be given 3-year contracts), then at the least, I would want Muschamp given that same thing. If Miles, after those 3 years, wants to promote Clay, then let him do it then.
LSU gave up 35 points to Iowa in their bowl game and got drilled with the worst defeat ever (I think...but can't remember) by UGA with inempt defense and terrible offense.
Nope good ole SOS snubbed us 44-9 in Saban's first year... that is LSU worst under Saban...Fran's 31-0 was nothing to scoff at either....think UGA 45-16 is a distant third to those two.
Miles has done a good job of getting defensive talent to stillwater. Certainly good enough to do better then 10th best defense in the big 12 (only Baylor and CU were better) The SEC got serious upgrades w/ Spurrier and Meyer. As hard as it is for me to believe that Miles was the best LSU could do, I'm pulling for the guy. But we'll know by the end of next year if he's going to make it. This team is loaded and the schedule is favorable. Any less then 9 wins and it'll be obvious that the admin blew it.
