"For the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country" http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=LYY73RO_egw&feature=related I realize she's not the candidate but is anyone else bothered by her comment? Was she not proud of how the country pulled together after 9-11? How about the bazillion times the US has provided money, aid, and resources to countries suffering natural disasters? Just hard for me to ponder.
She probably meant in the context of her being a Black American but she could have phrased it differently.
Not trying to make an issue, just looking for thoughts and discussion. She is the wife of the leading Democratic candidate. What she says at a formal speech is newsworthy and she KNOWS that. I'd feel the same of ANY spouse who made similar comments.......like Hillary claiming a "vast right wing conspiracy" not realizing the blue dress was about to come out of the closet. :hihi:
A shameful and disgraceful remark. Seriously, if this is the first time she has been proud of america because her husband is winning the primary then shame on her. Certainly going to have backlash on that empty suit she is married to regardless what she truly meant.
I don't like the comment either, but she's not running, and so I don't see it hurting Obama. Except for the Clintons, we tend to not focus on canidates spouses.
its going to be focused on if she is running or not. not likely to sway many fringe voters but it will be some.
No, but she is actively campaigning and the public is being told that she is a very intelligent, very well educated, and very well spoken individual. Double edged sword then. When they aren't so smart or savvy, the spouses make silly little speeches on unimportant topics. See Rosalyn Carter or Nancy Reagan or Barbara Bush.
I'm supporting Obama, and have a crush on Michelle Obama, so I'm biased, but I think that what she said is not really what she wanted to express - it was probably supposed to come out more like one of these sentiments: "I haven't been as proud as I am right now in a really long time." "For the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country during a presidential campaign."
