How far down into the deck supports (ramps, etc.) are they going to destroy? I was under the impression that they were just going to take down the seats and rebuild on the old supports. In this latest picture, it looks like they're starting to tear into the supporting structure.
They are starting over. The old structure comes completely down and it will be built just like the east upper. The new structure has to be separate from the bowl so TAF can control all the seats.
TAF has a nice animation of the new west side, but it may take forever to load if you don't have a high speed connection. http://www.lsutaf.org/westside_new/
They put in all of the new foundations during the last offseason and some during this season. The new upper is a different height and a different design so they could not use any of the old supports.
