No. 3 LSU vs. Arkansas, 2:30 p.m. (Friday) Nick Saban might be the most unappreciated coach in America because his team has been under the radar all season. If two more wins don't get the Tigers to the Sugar Bowl, they might punch his ticket to the NFL. LSU 24, Arkansas 17. When are they going to stop?
I know money can be an extremely tough thing to turn down, but if you're already making a butt-load of money, and someone offers you two butt-loads of money, is that enough to outweigh the negatives? List of negatives: Look at some former coaches and how they are faring - Spurrier, Butch Davis, etc. Have to deal with salary cap issues, players tend to be more selfish, harder to discipline, etc. No band. Won't have 92,000+ fans at home games.
I used to be worried about Saban leaving, before we won that Sugar Bowl. During that time he flat out said he wouldn't leave, atleast until his kids graduated. I know things can change, but I think right now that is the most important factor to him and his family. Saban has it pretty good, and it will take a lot to get him away from LSU. I don't think this year's Sugar Bowl chances will have anything to do with Saban staying or leaving. Saban is a coach in the NCAA. He knows the system. He understands that he can't control the polls. He knows USC was ranked in the top 6 last year in the BCS, and that they were ranked higher than us all year long. I don't see Saban jumping for the NFL, if LSU gets screwed this year. I can understand why coaches make the jump to the NFL. But I can't understand why highly successful NCAA coaches make the jump so quick. Long gone are the days of coaches sticking around 3 decades truely building and keeping up a program.
I agree with the "butt load" theory, but couldn't Spurrier and Davis have a college job in about an hour if they wanted to(maybe at Auburn )? So I don't think looking at their situation will sway Nick that much because he can always jump back to college ball if he runs into difficulty. The main factor or the big question is, how fond of LSU and Baton Rouge is Nick and his family? If Nick is happy at LSU then the "butt load" theory is in full force and effect. The money is nice but he probably has more than he can spend now anyway. However, if Nick has any interest at all in the NFL, then I think "more money" and the "butt load" theory take a back seat to Nick's professional goals and his ego. The money will be icing on the cake when compared to fulfilling a dream and accomplishing a goal. The ego remark was not a personal shot at Nick Saban, rather I believe that all coaches have a big ego and love the competition or else they wouldn’t be in the coaching business and would be doomed to fail. I would think a coach would have to have a big ego in order to fuel his desire to compete and win. Ego has to play in there somewhere when a coach leaves a good college job while on top for a NFL job. I think Nick is building a great program down there and it would be kind of strange if he were to abandon his hard work now and bolt for the NFL. Stranger things have happened, but I would scratch my head. Take care, Dave
