GoPokes.com reports: Miles accepts LSU Miles Accepts LSU; Gundy Next at OSU By Robert Allen Date: Jan 1, 2005 It's official - the end of the short, but successful Les Miles era of Oklahoma State football has come. Late Saturday night Miles informed officials at Louisiana State University that he would board a chartered jet on Sunday that will pick him up in Stillwater and take him to Baton Rouge where Miles will meet with the new LSU chancellor and then on Monday will be announced publicly as the new head coach at the school.
On our airwaves up here By the way, good luck with Bill Clay, the masterful mind of the 73rd ranked defense in the country. He is one of 3 coaches coming with Miles.
Thanks. LSU's cup overflows with the plethora of blockbuster coaches that are headed to BR to be our new coaching staff. Can you tell how excited I am? :nope:
We kept the guys we wanted, the young arrogant guns. The recruiters. After looking at all the facts, I'm not so sure you guys are getting a very good deal.
We will see how this all works out I have seen nothing official about his hiring much less what his staff here is going to look like. You can bet all the assistants Miles wants except the OC will be more than happy to follow, it's just a matter of if he wants them.
Yeah, don't think anything of assistants at this time. Guys who had certain positions at OSU may have others here (ex: the DC may, now that he's in BR, become a line coach). Well, now that the bowl season is over, assistants much like head coaches are free to choose from available jobs at other schools. LSU is attractive to assistants as well, you know. Why? When was the last time you heard the Tulane OC mentioned as a HC candidate? I didn't think so. I doubt seriously he'll retain any members of Saban's staff, definitely not the coordinators.
According to RA, the 3 that are going with him are Bill Clay, Josh Henson and Mack Butler. Also according to RA, HB has talked to Defoe and Monken personally about staying on with Mike. As for the rest I don't know. I think most will stay on and continue what has been started. Congrats to Mike and lets go get that NC. RA is Robert Allen, who is paid by OSU. I think collectively as fans we were worried that Miles would take everyone, not that we wanted Bill Clay to stay. We were worried that DeForest and Monken would go. The two best recruiters and position coaches on staff. Don't read too much into the Bill Clay stuff. He is nothing short of an EXCELLENT teacher of the game and a GREAT linebackers coach. It is just his 4-2-5 scheme that is questionable. Miles and Clay both stand by the "you have to have the right players to fit the scheme" We just thought that in 4 years, they should have those players. You guys already have those players. I sincerely think you guys will be in the NC game next year. You guys got a really good deal in Coach Miles, he is for real.
Methinks ReaganEden speak with forked tongue. FIRST, you say: Then, IN THE SAME POST, you tell us: I've noticed all along that you Okie State types around here don't seem too terribly broken up about the prospect of losing Miles. That threw up a red flag w/ me. This post does nothing to allay my suspicions.
LSU under Nick played nickle coverage a lot, making it an effective 4-2-5. It worked just fine and there are physical defensive backs here that can play it. Nick was very good at recruting defensive backs. Miles needs to be smart like Nick and hire some assistants with SEC experience. Nick took the oportunity to hire a new staff from the best assistants. Nick has turned them over regularly when they didn't get their job done, too. Excessive loyalty to assistant coaches cost Charlie Mac and Gerry Dinardo their jobs at LSU. This is the big leagues and Miles needs to acquire top men, pay them well, and cut them loose if they ain't getting it done. This was one of Nick's philosophies that should be chiseled in stone for a head coach that wants to succeed.
