http://athletesacceleration.blogspot.com/ I guess I can't really vouch for the "expertise" of this source but the guy sure sounds like he knows what he's talking about and he throws out some numbers to back it up. Read what he wrote if you're interested, the video is somewhat interesting too. Kinda makes you wonder about the 40 times we hear reported by players at the combine, and hell, even what we hear about our own team. Can anyone here for sure refute what is being claimed about 40 times on this site? Did everyone else already know this and I'm just a fool for believing times like 4.3? I'm not talking about the stuff with HS coaches and a manual stopwatch, I'm talking about the other stuff. And yes, I'm aware that programs often contain BS physical stats for players, but this calls into question other seemingly unbiased numbers. Thought yall would be interested. Saw the link posted somewhere else on the internet.
Something similar to that article was first published years ago by, I think, a consultant for the NFL. It did the same thing and compared world class sprinters times with these low times posted by football players. I think the bottom line was the 40 times posted for football players is greatly exagerated and I agree. However, if all measurements for football players are based on the same flawed logic then your faster players are still your fastest players. They may not be as fast as advertised but neither is everyone else so its all relative.
that sounds fine and all but it sure sounds like the methods used can and do vary quite a bit. I think the only way you can say one guy is faster than the other is if he beats him to the corner or not, or down the field or not, catches him from behind or not, etc...
A very enlightening post. I have no doubt it is all true, but times are relative. Lets say Joe Smith runs the fastest recorded time at the combine at 4.35, but actually ran a 4.68. However, the same applies to all the other competitors. Their times are not as fast as officially recorded either. Smith remains the fastest time, even if it is not as fast as recorded. It is all relative.
This is why every team sends their own scouts to the Combine and workouts. Their guys should know what their own timing tendencies are and can compensate. So if a guy's 40 time is being reported as a 4.43, no team in their right mind is going to release THEIR time for the guy. Or, it could be the Raiders doing the timing, and they end up with 4.10, and draft him two rounds too early. :hihi:
