Saban is content with Mauck at the helm and Randall backing him up. If Mauck was to go down again, Saban would likely prepare one/both of the freshmen, and would NOT play them unless Randall went down. He knows the talent these kids possess, and he wants to keep them here as long as possible. At this point, you can expect Mauck to be the starter going into next season. Saban doesn't want to burn 2 years of PT for these freshmen by playing them this year. They will both be the #2 next season, Randall will be the #3 after the spring. The plan is to redshirt them, give them an opportunity to compete for the No. 2 next season, and then the starter will emerge with 3 full seasons starting with the year after next when Mauck is in med school. Of course, this is all speculation, but I feel pretty good about this course of action.
I think that MobileBengal has also hit on an excellent point to dispute those nasty rumors that fly around. MobileBengal - “I think Saban has done what is best for the program, at the expense of this year, IF Mauck were to get hurt. The risk/reward ratio is higher this way. If there were any truth to the rumors, why would Saban care if a red shirt were wasted or not?
