hello all, ut (texas) graduate and first time poster on tigerforums here. i'm a regular over at big12warzone and soonerfans but not many other places. anyway, i'm going to be making my first trip to an sec conference game this week in baton rouge for the lsu-auburn game. i am jacked up about it and am anticipating an amazing atmosphere for the game. i've never been to tiger stadium but i figure a place that has actually registered a seismographic reading has to be pretty damn impressive. last week, i went to nebraska for the tamu @ neb game at memorial stadium and was underwhelmed with the fans and atmosphere there so hopefully, you guys will make up for it. it's my third stop on my college footbal tour de force of stadiums/games this year (outside of dkr texas-memorial stadium). like i said, nebraska last week, the red river shootout the week before, ksu at texas the week before, and ucla at ou...gonna do the osu at michigan game and texas at tamu games later in the year. death valley at night against auburn is the one i am most looking forward to since we got raped by ou in the rrs though. anyway, just a couple of questions. i saw a few other people with similar threads but i have a few unique questions. 1) we are staying at a hotel that is right on the west side of the river on i10. is that walking distance from the stadium or should i try to plan on driving/parking from the hotel? 2) how do my buddies and i get in on some of that cajun food tailgating? oyster and duck gumbo? jumbalaya? are tailgaters pretty friendly and receptive or should we plan on going to a restaurant? we'd be willing to make some donations. where around the stadium are the biggest and best tailgaters? what time should we try to arrive? 1-ish? 3) is an hour before the game a good time to aim for being in our seats? 4) where do we go after the game to try and round up some of that sweet, lsu tail? is there a bar/club scene or should we go looking for greek/student parties on/near campus? basically, where do we go from the stadium after the game for the best time in the red stick? thanks guys, like i said, i am really looking forward to the trip and i can't wait to experience tiger stadium at night against a big time rival with something on the line. i'll even be sporting some lsu gear!
You will have a blast. Wear LSU gear and introduce your self tell them your story and you will be treated like a long lost son. The food is out of this world. Drink and eat up and have fun. This will be your best trip of the year. bar none.
your going to hava blast. as far as your questions 1. no hotel is within walking distance so you will have to drive. come early because parking can be a problem. 2. As far as getting some good food just walk around talk to people and like az said you will be treated like a king. Or you can hook up with some of the guys off of here and tailgate with them. As far as restraunts I would suggest chimes (right off campus bout 200yds) or a new place called Walk Ons(bout 1/8 mile from campus if that). Both have a large selection of beer and ok food(chimes is better). If you want some real cajun food I would suggest Mike Andersons (about 1.5 miles from campus on brightside on the west side of nicholson) or Boutians (spelling?) which is on bluebonnet by the mall. I would try to get to campus about 11 or ealrier though. I usually watch gameday though. 3. I would get in my seat erlier if you have student tickets but about that time if you have normal tickets. 4. for after the game a lot of lsu students go to the bars in tigerland. it is about .5 miles south of the campus. They have 5 good bars there I would suggest (reggies or tigerbar if you wanna dance and freds or dublins if you wanna chill. at freds you can still dance though and at tigerbar you can just chill too. you will have fun no matter what.)
For question #3, I would say more like a half hour before the game (unless you're in the student section). For question #4, you probably want to go by the Varsity area after the game. It's walking distance from the stadium which makes it convenient. The bars along Nicholson are another option (also walking distance) but in the other direction. Also, sounds like you are too far to walk. Exit right after you get off the bridge and follow all of the other cars down River Road. If you get to campus around noon, there should be plenty of parking. P.S. If you find a tailgaiting spot with a TV and food, maybe ask the score of the game and start saying how this is your first trip to Tiger Stadium and brown nose a little bit. You should be able to get a lot of free food. There's also places around in case you can't.
1. Sounds like you are staying in Port Allen which is a good idea b/c the hotels are nice and dirt cheap and almost the same driving distance if staying in Baton Rouge off of Government. Anyway, yes you will need to drive across the bridge and take the first exit Nicholson/Highland. Take a right on the fork, then a left at the next fork that says to LSU and you will run right into the stadium. 2. Well, if you wear an Auburn T-shirt and you are nice then more than likely we'll be a lot more receptive than if you wear a Texas t-shirt. I personally have never tried going to another tailgate and bumming. Hell, i feel guilty sometimes bumming of my own uncles tailgate. 1-ish is a good time to arrive. You will park far from the stadium but that doesn't matter b/c there is a 1-mile radius on each side of Tiger Stadium where people are tailgating. biggest tailgaters are probably Krewe of Ragoo. 3. that's ample time...in fact maybe a little too early...most Tiger fans wait until 30 minutes or less to go in...the earlier u go in, the less time u go to drinK!! 4. go to Bogie's for free Jager after an LSU victory!!! for sweet sorority tail, there's a group of bars/clubs about a mile from the stadium...freds, tigerland, etc....plenty of hotties there...beware, many stuck-up and snobby though
If you are on the west side of the river, you will definitely need to drive to campus for the game. You will want to leave early to get a spot. Not sure where the best place to park is, maybe someone else can help me out with that. One o'clock is a decent time to get there, but tailgating will start a long time before that. You may want to get to campus long before 1 just to get a parking spot.
Welcome WJ. IYou picked the right game to come to this year. A rivalry of sorts has been building up between LSU and Auburn over the past 5 years or so and it will be loud and rowdy. Let me try to address your questions. 1) we are staying at a hotel that is right on the west side of the river on i10. is that walking distance from the stadium or should i try to plan on driving/parking from the hotel? Sounds like you're staying in Port Allen. It's only about 5 minutes away with no traffic but you're definitely going to have to drive to campus. Take the Highland exit right over the bridge and Highland road will take you right into campus 2) how do my buddies and i get in on some of that cajun food tailgating? oyster and duck gumbo? jumbalaya? are tailgaters pretty friendly and receptive or should we plan on going to a restaurant? we'd be willing to make some donations. where around the stadium are the biggest and best tailgaters? what time should we try to arrive? 1-ish? Most people are willing to share, it's just a matter of how friendly you are and how you approach them. 1ish isn't bad but the later you arrive the harder it is to park. I would say around 11-12 would be better. 3) is an hour before the game a good time to aim for being in our seats? Sounds perfect. You'll get to see both teams warm up and see pre-game band. You definitely DO NOT want to miss it. 4) where do we go after the game to try and round up some of that sweet, lsu tail? is there a bar/club scene or should we go looking for greek/student parties on/near campus? basically, where do we go from the stadium after the game for the best time in the red stick? Serrano's/Varsity/Chimes on Highland right near the north gate seems to be where everyone goes after the game. Music, booze, food, cuties. Everything a growing boy needs. Have fun. PS- Do not wear an Auburn t-shirt. You will have "Tiger Bait" ringing in your ears for hours. Wear something Purple and Gold or if not, without any other school's logos.
You cant miss the march down Victory Hill on North Stadium Drive. The players and band begin moving about 2 hours before game time, and the band will stop before going into the stadium to play Pregame for the sea of people waiting.
Since I now live in Dallas, it's that sea of purple and gold at the bottom of Victory Hill that's one of my most missed memories. Make sure you're there when the Golden Band from Tigerland marches in. The Red River Shootout will seem quite vanilla to you after your Saturday night in Tiger Stadium. I was a freshman in '88 during the Earthquake Game. I remember being tackled and kissed by a guy I'd never seen before and never saw afterward--but it was a great kiss!
thanks for all the great info guys! if the tailgaters are half as receptive and friendly as you guys, we won't have any problems getting porked up on cajun food and beer before the game. i appreciate all the advice and again, am really looking forward to one of the greatest college football environments in the country. i'll be donning a grey and purple nike lsu shirt all day. i know better than to wear horn gear and don't care for auburn very much. one last question, the two guys going with me and i got seats in section wu24. is that a student section or what? we couldn't get 3 seats right together so our seats are just a few apart. are people pretty hardlined about who sits where in that section or does it turn into more of a mosh? again, thanks for the replies...with some good weather this weekend, i can't think of a better weekend for 3 twenty three year old college football fans than spending it in baton rouge for an lsu-auburn night game!
