I picked up Phil Steele's preview magazine last night after having read a blurb of his on Dandy Don. Phil has LSU rated #2 in is "Surprise Teams for 2003" behind Pitt. He states that LSU's schedule is favorable and, as a result, his main set of ratings calls for LSU to go 12-0. This despite not being ranked in the top 10 in any of his 7 sets of ratings. Last year, Ohio St. was not ranked in the top 10 in any of Phil's power ratings, yet three of his sets of ratings picked them to go undefeated. A little more on the subject: In 2001, Ohio St. finished the year with five losses, including one to South Carolina in the Outback Bowl. In 1999, Oklahoma finished the year with five losses, including one to Ole Miss in the Indy Bowl. (LSU had five losses last year, including the Cotton Bowl loss.) Neither team had phenomenal QBs, just solid play from each. Both had good defenses that seemed to improve throughout the year (points allowed fell for each during the year). Could 2003 be LSU's "surprise" year?
I was talking to my dad the other day and he siad he feared for Baton Rouge and New Orleans if LSU went to the title game this year. And if the Tigers won it, they would need to bring in the National Guard to tame all the fans. Do you think it is possible to drink New Orleans dry???
One more thing -- prior to 2002, we only had two seasons in the last 50 years in which we've lost 5 games with no ties. One was in 1979, Charlie Mac's last year. The other was 1957. And you know what happened in 1958.
Drink New Orleans dry? An interesting idea. Just because its never been done dosen't mean its not worth trying.
