I think that if LSU wants to play any of the good mid-majors in the forseeable future they will need to do a 2 for 1 type of deal. What does everyone think of something like that?
I think that would be good. I've already said I would not mind doing a 2 for 1 with TCU or a similair school. TCU would give us exposure in the DFW area plus there is a large Alumni group in the area.
If we structure the road game to be in an appropriate year (a 12 game year), we would be fine. I am also in favor of having "premium games" and "non-prememium" games. Many major universities already do this.
But that can leave open the possibility of us pulling a 'Maryland' like this year. I can remember the discussions on the board when Maryland lost at N. Illinois, it seemed like everyone was incredulous to why a BCS conference team would play a MAC team on the road. Now we can see why.
It would, then, be our responsibility NOT to lose to such a team on the road. Upper tier teams don't lose those Northern Illinois types of games. We're knocking on the door of the upper level, but we may need to change the way we do some things to join the party. I'd love a 2 and 1 TCU game. I live in DFW. I could even see that one being big enough to need to play it in Texas Stadium. Besides, Fort Worth is a pretty fun town, and I think the LSU faithful would enjoy it.
There are only 1 or 2 12 game seasons in a decade usually. In the next 20 years there are only 4 seasons to play 12 games. Those are 2008, 2013, 2014, and 2019. The fact is scheduling is very difficult.
Yes it is. That's why, with this new surcharge going in, Coach Bertman should make building up a massive cash surplus for the athletic department top priority. Why, you ask? Well, if we did that, we wouldn't need seven home games every year just to balance the budget and we would have much more flexibility with scheduling. Face it, all BCS opponents are going to insist on a home-n-home, and a lot of top level mid-majors are going to want at least a 2-for-1 deal. If we weren't up against this wall where we've absolutely got to schedule seven home games just to balance the budget every year, we could have an easier, higher quality schedule. Of course, it will take a while. We get about $2.75 million dollars for every home game. It would probably take the athletic dept. four or five years to save up that much money, and just one year of six home games obliterates that surplus and you have to start over. But if the opponents are good enough, it might be worth it.
