good perspective from Brody Miller at the athletic: LSU just needed to win Saturday. It’s an overachieving team, and in tough situations like coming off defeating Alabama in overtime, don’t worry about style. If LSU looks similar against UABand Texas A&M, then be concerned. Oh yeah, LSU just won the SEC West Take this one in, LSU fans. LSU just won the SEC West. Before worrying about actually winning the conference title or chances at the College Football Playoff or what it all means long term, step back and realize LSU just won what has been considered the toughest college football division for more than a decade. It did it with a team that wasn’t even ranked a month ago. For many, 2019 is this strange comet of a season. It was the best season in LSU history and the most enjoyable year in most fans’ lives, but it stands far from the reality of what LSU football has been for the past 11 years. Famed The Athleticcommenter Catherine B. put it well in a comment after LSU beat Alabama: When something goes so far beyond what is expected or seems possible, it is by necessity an outlier. I cherish 2019 for its excitement and explosiveness and possibly the finest collection of offensive talent and most unstoppable machine in the history of college football. But this. This win wasn’t transcendent. This win wasn’t an outlier. This win was what we should expect. Because outside of 2019, LSU hasn’t won the West since 2011. It hasn’t had a 10-win regular season since 2012. It’s been a program understood to be one of the best but always a full tier away from the powers it’s chasing. So for Kelly to come in Year 1, inheriting a roster that fielded just 39 scholarship players in the Texas Bowl on Jan. 4, and win the West? It’s a moment to savor even without the hope or expectation of bigger things down the road. The ride is the best part, not the destination. These are the good days.
