Two games come immediately to mind from years past where LSU did serious damage to Auburn's season. In 1972, Auburn was picked at or near the bottom of the SEC but had a surprising and tremendous season. The Tigers finished the regular season 9-1, then beat Colorado 24-3 in the Gator Bowl to finish no. 5 in the AP poll. The loss? 35-7 to LSU in Baton Rouge. During the 1988 season, AU again lost only one game during the regular season. The Tigers finished this regular season 10-1 but went on to lose to Florida State in the Sugar Bowl. The lone regular season loss? 7-6 to LSU at Baton Rouge. AU could have potentially been playing for the MNC both seasons except for that one regular season loss.
The 88 game was the "Earthquake game" when the crowd response to Tommy Hodson's last minute touchdown pass to Eddie Fuller was recorded on the seismagraphs
The Earthquake game was not of this Earth. It's as though every Louisiana Tiger who ever lived came to Tiger Stadium in spirit form to guide the ball from Hodson to his receivers during that last drive. The only football experience that surpasses it is the November, 1970 Mighty Boot of Tom Dempsey. Saint's placekicker Tom Dempsey boots a record 63 yard field goal to defeat the Detroit Lions with 2 seconds left in the game. The field goal record has yet to be broken. I was lucky enough to be in my seat at the stadium for both of those games.
Speaking of great games with great finishes, the 1972 game with Bert Jones' last second pass could only have happened in Baton Rouge.
I was at a USL game and listening to LSU on the radio. I was jumping up and down and screaming while everyone around me thought I was insane. My blind date that night, a Chalmation, had previously dated Norris Weese (so she said) and had been teasing me the whole game. I was seriously in her face after the final TD. LSU scored that night. I didn't.
