LSU employees face furloughs, cuts - WAFB Channel 9, Baton Rouge, LA |

Funny how the furloughs only affect Professional and classified employees. Faculty is exempt. What a crock of $hit. Professors and the Administrative chancellors, etc are exempt. (while i love LSU Athletics, rumors are that they are exempt too.)

Funny how the idiot sending out the emails using the LSU mail server that was "keeping us up to date" on all Budgetary issues just happened to not send out this plan before it was given to the media.

Only tenured faculty is exempt. Untenured Research Professors and Research Associates "serve at the pleasure of the Board of Supervisors".

Only if they happen to be tenured. Many in the Professional/Administrative classification are not. I am not.

The Athletic Department is entirely self-funded and receives no state funds. Thus they receive no cuts.

Read the pdf again. They do not distinguish between tenured and not. I get your point, but that is not what they are saying. They only specify staff anf ancillaries, there is no mentioned of non-tenured faculty.

I am in an even stranger boat. I am "research" staff. My situation is not discussed at all.

They are part of the University. The Athletic employees are considered LSU employees. They are located on LSU grounds. When the initial talk of furloughs were mentioned, Les Miles' base salary was used as an example of how much of an impact a furlough would be.

Thanks for the thread. I likely would not have stumbled upon the budget pdf for a few days. I'm hoping things work out for those of yo who are main campus employees. Within the Agcenter, there are no planned furloughs fortunately. As for layoffs, it is my understanding that for the most part they will be avoided by simply eliminating unfilled positions (due to hiring freezes) from the budget. So many grey areas though, never know what is really going on.

see that is another thing that pisses me off about this. The guy from the budget office sent us annoying useless emails for months, but when an email from him would actually be useful, that email is no where to be found.

Read between the lines. What I'm saying is that Classified Staff civil servants can't be dismissed unless there a formal emergency layoff. Tenure protects tenured Unclassified Faculty employees from dismissal, unless there is a declared emergency layoff. Other Unclassified employees, whether Faculty, Research Faculty, or Professional/Administrative are hired and fired all the time and have no civil service protection. We can be dismissed at any time for any reason or forced to accept furloughs without any emergency being declared. Civil Servants and Tenured Faculty have legislative and legal protections that LSU is unlikely to challenge when it is so easy to dismiss Unclassified Research Associates.

They are self-supporting, so cutting them saves no state funds. I doubt very much if furloughs are going to be universal across the campus. More likely department by department depending on whether they decided to layoff people or retain people by furlough.

My department has enough outside contact money to carry us for almost a year and hopefully more contracts will be coming in. But at some point if LSU budgets aren't restored, many people here will have no job security and will move on to greener pastures.

Krypto Red and other LSU employees, I wish you luck in avoiding a pay cut. That's a bummer. It's amazing how far reaching a recession like this goes. It literally hits everybody. 48 states had budget shortfalls to deal with. I think it was North Dakota and Wyoming that didn't so unless you want to move there, we'll all be affected to varying degrees.

True, but states don't all value pro footballers, chicken plant pluckers, and union auto workers over universities and hospitals.
